Now i never played QB so i am making assumptions from watching and from "experts talking" this is not a BASH of Penny or a glorification of Henne just my thoughts.
Ok I like most of you saw that Penny's injury will keep him out for atleast one week maybe more my guess is we will find out for sure on tuesday.
Ok so this means Chad Henne will start next week vs the Bills. Perosnally i am excited to finally see what the kid has. A week of practice and reps and film study prep knowing you are going to play should benefit him or atleast i hope it does.
I think we will open the play book again another prayer Henning never calls for long pass plays with any kind of regularity UGH.
Now i saw some post saying that Penny's arm strength is fine he can throw this and that and his throw to Ginn to open the game was fine. YES Penny can throw the ball far enough he has ok arm strength. But Penny's issue is that it is so ingrained in him to be careful and dink and dunk that while he does go downfield it is like 2 times and then he completely stops. You can blame the O-line some but when you need 3 or 4 seconds of protection to get it downfield that will happen. He is smart and accurate we know that and he is a leader. But his physical limitations limit our ceiling which i believe we saw last year.
Now some observations on Henne.....he was good not great BUT NOT TERRIBLE...my god you vultures have been circling him from day one....this is not madden you cant sub Henne then go for 300 and 4 td's in a half. Ok now that is out of my system....
He looked ok good velocity some good touch still throws alil hard on some routes though. From what i could see he didnt stare down receivers Weddle read the route and read the progression perfectly and got the pick...i mean the guy is an all pro and it happened to Penny against Ed Reed so get off of him for that he got beat by the D a D that makes Manning and Brady look average. He is really hard to bring down he shook off a few guy on that over the LOS pass which is nice to see....and made a great throw on the run...every pass CAUGHT had a pop on the pads which is nice to see the receivers will have a week to get use to Henne's ball speed and his delivery and timing and all that. Overall he did ok he didnt blow anyone away but he did a good job for a guy who knew he was 3rd string wasnt expecting to play got thrown into a tight game with a good D and conservative play calling that got him in bad situations he did fine....lets see how he does when he prepares as a starter.
NOW....I do believe that Penny is our best SHORT TERM solution if we want to win more games this year we will need Penny to be our QB plain and simple.
BUT....i do believe that HENNE is out long term solution you cant call him a bust because he didnt light it up...lts give him 10-12 games....remember Flacco looked completely lost for 2 or 3 weeks.....Rivers struggled in his first handful of starts....THEY WANTED ELI GONE.....and Peyton threw like 29 ints in his rookie year.....ok dont give Henne a title yet.....he has the skill set needed to do well lets see how he plays....if this team is serious about being a SB contender they will allow our YOUNG TALENT to develop....
and you can say all you want about what the other guys had that he doesnt...but our running game looks pretty good and if R&R can keep doing that Henne will have more success....will we win more games with Penny MAYBE/PROBABLY but will we develop and become more serious contenders and have more questions answered if Henne starts MOST DEFINITELY.
Penny = short term and wins
Henne = long term development and answers to IMPORTANT questions
oh one more thing...PLEASE CS DO NOT MAKE HENNE INTO PENNY 2.0....let the kid throw it around stretch the field and use check downs as a final option not the first look
