But David Carr is Worth $46 Million for seven years and a $10 million $ signing bonus. WOW! I'm happy with Jay Fiedler, Ricky Williams, Chris Chambers, Olindo Mare, Oronde Gadsden. Those salaries don't even add up near that total. I would rather have all those 5 instead of David Carr.

Deal could reach $60 million.........if he becomes the most productive QB in NFL history. Just a little FYI.

now we know why the Texans have not been spending $$ left and right in FA.

Well Vick's deal last year could earn him up to $63 million. That is why teams are trying to trade out of the first few picks all the time. The top 5 picks are huge cap busters, especially if the player isn't performing at a high level by their third season. It is hard to watch an $8 million cap hit sit on your bench and learn for a year or two, when in fact $8 mil can fill so many other needs.

NBA has the best system for rookie contracts, the NFL should look into it. Teams are breaking themselves financially on these high picks, too much cap room is used up for a rookie.

Top 5 picks could be as much as 6-12% of your cap space. Dangerous game to be playing with such young, unproven players.

I agree. The NBA really does a good job in all aspects of salary control setting the maximum based on your history, etc. What a waste of money. MLB should also follow in the NBAs footsteps.

it is just soooo much easier for the NBA since their are only 12 players and they play both ways. MLB is much more similar to NFL in the having D vs. O specialists, but of course, they have no control.

Some sort of control will be needed or...

...the draft will drop from highlight of the off-season calendar to a farce if franchises cannot afford to pay the contracts for the draft position they take and no other franchise is in the market to trade up. Do they have a right to pass on their pick?

I read an article recently which suggested there are teams with top ten picks who would like to trade down but there are no suitors because of cap constraints on the kind of deals top ten picks command. Sorry, can't remember where I read it.

We must be close to the point where limitations have to be set.

David Carr is probably not worth that kind of money. I highly doubt he's the next Marino or Elway.

It'd be funny to compare the contracts Marino and Elway got back in 1983 to the contracts Vick and Carr have now.

I agree. Houston should not have pulled that off. WAY OVERPAID! The only reason he is the #1 pick is because Houston needs a QB and he is the best out there in a fairly weak class. I think Brees is a better QB than Carr! Plus, you have no insurance at QB. Look at Ryan Leaf and Cade McNown. Carr probably has a 50% chance of being a quality starter in three years. If Houston did not want Carr, who knows who would have picked him up.

The NBA may have a great idea about rookie salaries, but look at what some of the vets make...

I know these are considered "underacheivers" , but some of these salaries just seem ridiculous. Some of THE best NFL players are lucky if they make half of that in a year. It's one thing to be financially secure, but most of these guys can buy their own countries(so it seems).
