Per Barry Jackson: Fins sign LB Paysinger

Free-agent linebacker Spencer Paysinger signed with the Dolphins on Thursday, providing the team much-needed depth at the position.

Paysinger, 26, comes to the Dolphins via the New York Giants, with whom he spent the first four years in the league. He broke in as an undrafted rookie in 2011, and has appeared in all but two games in that time. While mostly a situational player for the Giants, Paysinger did start 10 games in 2013, recording 65 tackles and a sack.

He logged just 81 snaps on defense last year, but was one of the team's stronger special teams contributors. Paysinger will presumably slide into the role occupied the last four years by Jason Trusnik, the kicking game standout who signed with the Carolina Panthers this week.

A Los Angeles native, Paysinger played collegiately at Oregon.

Spencer Paysinger's deal is for one year, I've been told.

Yep, good signing . . . also a player who has started at WLB for the Giants, so Jordan Tripp can stay on his toes a bit.

He is 6'2" 231 pounds and will be 27 in June. Last year, played 81 snaps and 707 snaps in 2013 being around average. He played mostly WOLB but did play in the middle some. He was really good on special teams and, with M Thomas, can make our ST's special.

I like the sign

wouldn't expect much on defense, but he has freakish long arms and is a very good special teamer, good signing

Spencer Paysinger says no decision on him playing WILL or SAM but definitely a special teams guy

"I did my homework on them before the trip and I saw they had opportunity here," Spencer Paysinger about why he signed with Miami.

Spencer Paysinger said he was a special teams captain with the Giants.

As per PFF, he had 7 tackles, 3 assists, with 0 missed tackles on ST's. He ranked #29 of 1200 listed.

M Thomas had 10 tackles, 2 assists, and 0 missed tackles. He ranked #15 of 1200, and would have been better if healthy.

Our special team just got much better.

So you're saying Miami has upgraded :hi5:

We now have 6 LB's. Does this effect how we draft a LB if we draft one at all? I never expected a LB in round 1 as many have because I just don't see a LB worthy of 14. But maybe we still look for one in the later rounds?

Uhh, yes. Absolutely. We have no starting caliber mike, and there are 5 who could come in and start right away from the draft. At least two or so should be available at pick 47.

I'm liking the idea of one in round 2 but to my point IMO we have needs that can be better addressed in round 1

Played at Oregon?

I smell trade bait with Chip!

Jk..... no really.
