Nick Saban Memorial Quotes of the Week

Dec. 11: "I'm not going anywhere.''
Dec. 21: "I'm not going to be the Alabama coach.''
-- Dolphins coach Nick Saban.
Jan. 3: "It took us a long time to get out of there, but we're glad to be here.''
-- Terry Saban, wife of Alabama coach Nick Saban, to reporters upon arriving in Tuscaloosa Wednesday.
Jan. 4: "What I realized in the last two years is that we love college coaching.''
-- Alabama coach Nick Saban.
Jan. 4: "You know what he was as Dolphin coach? A failure. A loser. A gasbag. The tombstone on his Dolphin career reads, 'Talked like a warrior, acted like a weasel.' ... He will be remember in these parts as a quitter and a liar.''
-- Miami Herald columnist Dan LeBatard.

2. I think Wayne Huizenga looks like the biggest doormat in the NFL right now. "I'm not upset with Nick. I think Nick is great. I love Nick Saban,'' he said the other day. You love Nick Saban? This man who committed to coach your team for five years, who convinced you to hire 23 assistant coaches (aggregate salary for the 19 regular assistants and four "grad-assistant'' types: about $6.7 million per year, most in the league except for Washington), who preached commitment to his players and walked out after two measly years, who left your franchise in worse shape than when he took it over ... you love this man?
Obviously Huizenga was a merciful guy after Saban dirtied his reputation, figuring the press and public would do the character assassination on Saban so well that Huizenga wouldn't have to say anything. But consider your fans, man. If I'm a Dolphins fan, this is what I'm thinking: What kind of owner do we have who gets taken advantage of by a coach, then stands up and talks about his affection for the guy when every fan out here wants to throw up?

What he should have said is, 'I personally like Nick Saban, but the line is drawn in the sand right here and right now: No coach will ever, ever take advantage of this franchise that way again. When the next contract is signed, the coach will agree to a clause that says he will not coach for the life of the contract anywhere else except Miami. And if he's not willing to sign that contract, he won't be employed by the Miami Dolphins.'' Period.

3. I think the contrast between the departures of Saban and Bill Cowher was downright striking. Saban slithered out of Miami. Cowher walked away with class. Both he and owner Dan Rooney said all the right things (and meant them) in their departure press conference, and Cowher walked away with dignity fully intact.

Saban's tenure, and his departure, were disgraceful, and he never faced the discordant music he created by leaving a franchise in the lurch. Then he fled to Alabama and talked to a few Miami-area writers, including a buddy of mine, Alex Marvez, who wrote Sunday: "Saban never struck me as a Seinfeld aficionado. But listening to his explanations for leaving to become Alabama's head coach invoked memories of advice George Costanza offered when Jerry Seinfeld was trying to pass a lie-detector test. 'Remember: It's not a lie if you believe it.' ''
I don't care how he spins it. Saban's abandonment was despicable.

The part that tells the true story is what Terry Saban was quted as saying on Jan. 3, "It took us a long time to get out of there, but we're glad to be here.''
-- Terry Saban, wife of Alabama coach Nick Saban, to reporters upon arriving in Tuscaloosa Wednesday.

Sounds premeditated to me, not a last minute decision like Nicky wants everyone to believe.

Good, Im glad he is on our side. I can understand what he was saying about WH. Even though I believe WH took the high road on this, I wouldnt be mad at all if he went on a tirade and trashed Saban..

Little Nikki really soiled his rep. with this one, if there is poetic justice in this world, Alabama will continue to get pounded by Auburn and the rest of the SEC's best, and face the heat of the wacko's in charge at Alabama.

Good point. It was a classless comment to make considering all the good that Miami did (and was willing to do for the next 3 years) for their family. Water under the bridge. At least the two trolls have each other to keep company. :D

Nicky boy is gone. Let bygones be bygones

It has not been a week and Peter King does a weekly column every Monday so this is the first time we could read what he had to say

Peter did not even bring up that a few weeks ago on the NBC show he mentioned Saban might be leaving and Saban took him to task on it

I agree 100% on those comments by Peter king and Alex, And I hope that the next coach has a clause on his contract about coaching anywhere else. Its ridiculous that any coach can just leave like that without a clause stating otherwise.

IMO I thought when we got Saban we would be like a NE Patriots type but I was wrong. I thought that this team with Saban would be committed to win I thought he was a savior. But after this season I thought about the talent we had but kept losing. I dont think that Saban had control of the team like I thought he would. Face it he was not the man for the job.

What bothers me is how obvious it is that Wayne completely patronized the press and fans of the Dolphins with the "I love Nick" nonsense. Saban did the same thing in his conference.

What about the reputation of the Miami Dolphins? We are now a team in the bottom of our division with no identity and no direction. The more I think of it, the more I become fed up with how this went down.

Wayne should have called Saban out. No, he shouldn't have plastered him with insults, but what Shula said, Wayne should have said.

This next coaching position is going to be vital to our future.

Yep. That sounded like a "Freudian slip" to me. Nick and Terry aren't nearly as good at P.R. as they think they are. That statement was pretty dumb to say the least. In politics they call those "gaffes". They lose elections for them.

IMO he made the organization look bad when he left. Now that I think about it we were last in our division this year. The answer is a NFL coach not a college coach. We dont need a coach that everyday they think about going back to college. Saban should have stayed in LSU if he had doubts this is crazy to me.

This situation should serve us as a lesson. We were so blind by the hype that we failed to see what was plainly obvious. LSsU fans said it of the way he left, Braylon Edwards and others said it of the way he lied to their faces, the Saints organization said it of how he dealt with the Brees/Culpepper thing. His old assistants have said it of his controlling/demeaning manner. All signs pointed to this guy being a weasel and we dismissed all of these people as jelous/stupid. Now we look ridiculous. If I could have 5 minuites with Saban Ide love to give him a piece of my mind.
