Peter King: Ross wants Bill Cowher

I think Cowher would come here squarely because of the greatness he can achieve career-wise:

Rebuild and create an elite team to a once prestigious franchise.

In turn, doing what pass coaches failed to do, and placing himself clearly above them (namely JJ).

Compete against Belicheck, who of the few coaches to have a winning record versus him in the playoffs, regain dominant form and become division champions many times over his tenure.

Cowher's challenge to win a superbowl with a 2nd team would be quite a historic feat. What better team to achieve it with, than one which achieved something no other team has done (perfect season).

yeah but Cowher backed his up .unlike sparano. and for the rest of your question go bk and read this thread again.

All it is is: "Oh, he's hard-nosed and a leader". So was JJ, so was Saban, so was Parcells, so was Sparano, etc. Great, he's got alot of "rah-rah" rhetoric and is on TV. So was JJ in 1995. So was Parcells on ESPN.

When I think of Bill Cowher coached teams, I think of them choking in games it mattered most. Being heavily favored and losing at home to the Broncos in the 1997 season's AFC Title Game, losing to the Patriots in the 2001 and 2004's AFC Championship, then alot of seasons with 9-7, 8-8 style football. Sorry, not impressed.

Hell, the only SB they won, they needed alot of help from the refs to get it.

If we get Luck...there will be no "rebuilding". He instantly makes us playoff contenders...let alone a real coach who could manage the game.
I don't know how you could say instant playoff contender?! He hasn't taken a snap in the nfl! I want him bad but let's not make him out to be god!

When I think of Bill Cowher I remember how he always beat us and had that smile on his face which at the time I couldn't stand. I also remember his superbowl win. He can flat out coach. Comparing Cowher and Soprano is like comparing apples to oranges my friend.

bill cower is a poor mans bill parcells... it will be the same ol jazz.

I think if we had a decent qb playing for us this year, we could maybe be 4-2 or even 5-1[/SIZE]. worse case 3-3 and still in it. so ya, I agree with the above poster that luck could make us a playoff contender.
lmao!!

The guy never won a meaningful game in his life until the refs gift wrapped him a SB in 2006. Every time his team was heavily favored, they'd choke. Elway beat them silly in the playoffs, then they lost to a team QBed by Drew Bledsoe, who'd barely played all year long.

Lost against the Chargers in the AFC Title Game in 1995 (after the 1994 season).
Lost against the Broncos in the AFC Title Game in 1998 (after the 1997 season).
Got blasted by the Patriots in the AFC Championship, 2005 (after the 2004 season).

So the guy gets real worked up and spits alot, and yells. Great. Another gimmick. Wannstedt pushed his fingers through his hair, Sparano fist pumped, Cameron often looked like he didn't know whether to **** or go blind. Saban missed his audition for Napoleon.

When I think of Bill Cowher, I think of an angry guy on the sidelines who coaches mediocre teams and flames out in the playoffs when he lucks into getting there.

Dude's a loser. Color me unimpressed. I'd be willing to bet that if he were our coach, we wouldn't make it out of the AFC, likely not out of the divisional rounds. You all can quote me on that, go "oh man, you don't know football", or whatever else. Cowher sucks. We'd regret hiring him.

Well I know Manning is a QB but I guess he is a loser also cause that man choked all the time in the playoffs before he won the superbowl. Almost all those years Cowher was there he really never had a franchise QB till Big Ben and look what happened when he got him, they were consistently contendors. Now Cowher has a chance to come in to Miami and could have the number 1 pick to get his franchise QB...

Comparing Peyton Manning to Bill Cowher is comparing apples to oranges. Peyton Manning is one player on an entire team. Bill Cowher was the coach of an entire collection of players. It was his job to put them in the best position to win. C'mon man. They weren't consistently contenders. They went 15-1 the first year, got smacked down by Brady and Belichick in the playoffs. The next year, they went 10-5-1, and lost in the divisional playoffs to the Titans. The year after that, they lucked into the playoffs and went on a pretty good run and won the SB with some questionable calls, but yeah, they still won. The next year, they were 8-8. Hardly "contending every year".

He won a bunch of divisional titles? Great. New T-shirt every year, maybe a snazzy new felt number for a banner. Tony Sparano won the AFC East once too. What'd that get us? A nice t-shirt and an *** kicking courtesy of the Ravens. Cowher choked in the playoffs every year except once.

If he gets hired, I'll give the guy a shot, but we won't amount to anything special with him. Just more mediocre football from a guy who talks a good game and spits alot.

Whatever about the merits or demerits of Cowher as a coach in his time at Pitt, you've got to think that Ross will be mindful of all the empty seats. Taking an innovative coordinator from another team and making him HC to develop the Fins into a modern attacking threat in the AFCE is something a lot of hardcore Finfans might want. But how would that play to the wider fanbase? It's a big risk and it will reek of Ross underachieving to a fanbase and media that love to beat up on the team.

Cowher is a name. He's an iconic coach figure and he won a SB. People say doing the same thing twice and expecting a different outcome is the definition of stupidity, but don't put it past Ross to replicate his Parcells recipe for success. I don't think he feels he can afford to swing and miss on a less proven coach (and he might be right there).

Cowher has had quite a bit of time to sit and analyse how football is developing. He's probably watching a LOT of games and talking to a lot of people. He's probably focussing on the two or three teams he is likely to join in the new season and i'm sure Miami is one. He'll have had time to prepare for taking up the role and sorting us out tactically and personnel-wise in a way that most current coaches simply couldn't do. It's a small advantage but a definite one.

I'd probably prefer us to look elsewhere for a coach, but I can't see Ross passing up Cowher.

Bill Cowher knows how to win in the NFL, and more importantly, in a contemporary NFL. People like to say Cowher took 16 years to win a Super Bowl, but why was that? Cowher finally got his franchise quarterback in Ben Roethlisberger. Did you expect the Steelers to win super bowls with flakes like Neil O'Donnell, Kordell Stewart and Tommy Maddox?

The writing is on the wall...Cowher wants to coach the Colts. He gets Peyton Manning back next year and they become a contender once again.

Thats what he means by wanting to coach the team that gives him the best chance to win.
