I was a little surprised when I read this especially since Cam was the 1st pick & has been to the playoffs (last year their division was AWFUL). I'm a huge Tannehill fan & believe in him & was thrilled to see Peter King say that about him.

"9. I think you also can’t blame the Panthers for overpaying for Newton. What choice did they have? Quarterbacks are rare in the NFL, even average ones. A team that’s been to the playoffs two straight years can’t plan to let its mid-20-year-old signal-caller leave soon via free agency. The only way to prevent that is to make him one of the five highest-paid quarterbacks in the game. That’s simply what an adequate NFL quarterback costs. Newton’s contract is not a testament to Newton—it’s a testament to the price of his position. It was the same with Ryan Tannehill, who got a new deal shortly before Newton did. (And by the way, Tannehill, who has improved each year in his career, is a much better player and long-term prospect than his Carolina counterpart)."

I believe it. There is another thread about this and the majority don't agree though

Sorry autocorrect got me if Mods can fix the title to Cam Newton I would be appreciative.

I apologize if the is another thread I didn't notice it, mods feel free to merge if there is another one

The majority have barely watched Newton play.

All they see is playoffs. Boom qb is instantly better.

I agree he just doesn't have the mental side of the game and probably never will.

Its not about King saying it. Its just a debate about Newton and Tannehill. Which now seems to be about Brady vs Peyton for some reason

A team that’s been to the playoffs two straight years

It should be noted that..

- The 2013 Carolina Panthers made the playoffs with a #26 ranked offense, and #2 ranked defense.

- The 2014 Carolina Panthers made the playoffs with a LOSING record (7-8-1).

So it's not like Cam Newton is really leading his team to the playoffs. He's just along for the ride.

I like Peter King a lot, but I can't agree with him. Cam Newton is the better quarterback.

That being said, I'm very bullish on Newton. He's vastly underrated.

Interesting. What makes you say that? Record wise its a wash both barely sub .500

Tannehill is by far and away the better passer. There's no debating that.

But better "player"? That's an entirely different argument as each affects the game in different ways. If we're looking at scoring alone, Newton has 115 TD's in four seasons. For someone who is rather limited in terms of passing mechanics, the guy manages to score an awful lot.

He throws off his back foot and off balance a lot relying on his strong arm. But a duel threat.

If Newton were playing in the AFCE, he'd have records averaging 5-11 to 7-9, zero playoffs and less TDs.

Against extremely weak competition, with an excellent D, he's managed to make his team pedestrian. The league has caught up to the Newtons and Kaeps of the world. Newton is better than Kaep, but the point still holds. Kaep almost won a SB with a standout D and stacked skill players on O. And he's horrible at being a QB. Great at running and throwing to wide open WRs. Everything else is sad (which I've been saying long before it was popular and self-evident).

Newton is a physical freak who just happens to be a mental midget. But because he's less of a midget than Kaep, he'll always be a better QB.

And, as long as he has a great D and a terrible division, always overrated.

It should be noted that he said long term prospect too. I don't think anyone would argue that point. Long term wise a pocket passer always is better then the scrambling QB. The nfl always catches up to the latter
