27. Miami. I don't know who's playing quarterback, who's catching the ball or if Jason Taylor will ever speak to the great and powerful Bill "Oz'' Parcells. But you ask the people who know Parcells the best, and they'll tell you they like the way he's shaking up the bottom of the roster, and he's on his way to building a team that will give the Patriots a game soon. To do that in 2009 or '10, the Dolphins have to discover if they've got their quarterback of the future on the roster now. Best chance to be The Man, of course, is second-round pick Chad Henne.

I don't expect the Fins to be impressive in 2008. In all our fervor over the roster changes I think we're overlooking some pretty important points.

1. The middle of the defense is porous, at best. Jason Ferguson is backup quality in the NFL. Paul Soliai is at best a magnificently random wildcard. There is no Zach Thomas. The only Zach Thomas I'll be seeing in a Miami jersey is the fathead I put up on my wall in his honor. Replacing Zach is a guy in Akin Ayodele that arguably has not found a home since leaving the OLB position in Jacksonville's 4-3 defense. And the other spot? Reggie Torbor. Forgive me if he doesn't inspire awe out of me. The strength of the 3-4 defense needs to come from the inside, and to me our 3-4 defense seems hollow. This means they will probably have trouble stopping the run. The 3-4 defense's strength is supposed to be stopping the run, and traditionally the weakness is pass rushing, which is why you find all of the wrinkles in the defense being mostly geared toward increasing the pass rush. If you can't stop the run with this defense, as I suspect we will not be able to in 2008, then the defense has a pretty pointless look to it.

2. The offensive line is incredibly young. The average age of starters is something like 24 years old. That makes them by far the youngest in the league. I mean it's one of those things where the good news is the OL is incredibly young, means they could stick around a while. But, the bad news is they're incredibly young! They're going to get their QB killed, repeatedly. They'll make mistakes. Their run blocking could end up looking sloppy, not real tight in the five-guys-working-together sense.

3. Questionable QB position because of experience. Questionable RB position because of injury. Questionable CB position because of talent. Easy to assume Will Allen will be the same guy in 2008 that he was in 2007 but maybe we should be on the lookout for him turning out to be the same guy in 2008 that got run out of New York in 2006.

In the end, the only strength I believe we'll be able to truly fall back on will be our Special Teams unit.

No mention of Crowder in the LBs? That's going to raise some eyebrows. :err:

Good points all, although I'm higher on Torbor than CK is apparently.

Additionally, everybody is playing a new system, dont' underestimate that. The rookies obviously are transitioning to the NFL and we're purging the roster again. Even the guys that survived the purge last year will have an entirely new sytem. Instead of a finesse offense, we're running a power game. Instead of a 4-3 we're running a 34. The list is very long, but at a minimum, nobody will feel familiar. Sure, Jason Ferguson, Akin Ayodele have worked with this crew before, but not these teammates, and not in this heat.

We're still an ugly duckling along the DLine with a mixture of system misfits like Holiday and Roth, or yough players like Wright and Soliai, or just plain rookies in Langford and Merling. Plus we added 2 new veterans who are expected to be instant-leaders. Sporadic is the best we can hope for along the DLine. Just too many variables.

As CK mentioned, we're young along the offensive line, and we have a young and raw WR, and new TE and WR to integrate, plus we have 3 newish QB's none of which is very seasoned. Plus, we're changing the entire focus of the offense from one that scores points to one that controls the ball and clock. With that major restriction, we're going to see less opportunities to score, so we'd better be efficient. Not to mention that our QB's aren't ready for prime time, regardless of which one starts or finishes the season.

Our LB corp is completely overhauled, and nobody will play next to the anyone they really know in the LB line. We have a lot of learning and jelling to do there, but we should be OK.

Our Secondary is very fragile and not long on talent. At best we have a better-than-average secondary, but I don't think we'll ever be healthy enough to say that. Realistically, we'll have one of the worst secondaries in the NFL as losing players like Bell, Will Allen, Hill, etc. are huge problems because we have no depth. In this league you need 4 CB's, and we have 1 good one in Will Allen, and that's about it. Everyone else is mediocre at best. So, we'll need a savage pass rush to cover for our weak secondary.

Our pass rush hinges on players getting the 34 and the play of JT and Porter. Porter showed me something at the end of last season, but at his age injuries are always a concern. JT may not even be in Miami for most of the season depending upon whether we trade him or not. After those two, we seriously lack pass rushers, which will further exacerbate our problematic secondary.

No, we're not going to be good next year, but that's OK. What we need is for our players to learn the systems and grow as players. We're essentially playing for 2009 and if we get more than 5 wins that'll be a bonus.

good poitn but I disagree with number 2. Just b/c they are young it doesnt mean they will fail or not do all that well. Carey is a vet, smiley is a vet, and satele did great as a rookie up until the last 3-4 weeks give or take and wiht another year under his belt he should improve upon his rookie year. GB went in with 3 rookie O linemen 2 yrs ago i believe it was and Jets went with a rookie LT and C and they did just fine.

Rankings don't mean ****. Weren't we supposed to go to the bowl with the acquisition of Daunte Culpepper a couple of seasons back?

way to go out on a limb there

While Peter King took time to talk about how we have improved, Armando Salguero took all of a few minutes to declare that we are only the 30th best team in the league.

http://dolphinsindepth.blogspot.com/2008/05/where-do-upgraded-dolphins-rank-now.html

I am normally hesitant to bash on Salguero for hating on the Dolphins, but by piggy backing off another writer and then bashing him is just poor journalism.

So I think we got it Armando, you hate the Dolphins. Move On.

Calling Jason Ferguson a back up quality player is a little harsh. He is not a probowler, but he has had a very good career and is an above average nose tackle in this league.

Anyone else note what he said about the Bears at 25???

"Beginning on Oct. 9 the Bears will play five top-10-caliber defenses in a seven-game midseason stretch (Vikes, Titans, Packers, Vikes, Jags), and by the end of that period I'll be stunned if Rex Grossman and Kyle Orton don't have every Chicago fan looking skyward and asking, "Why didn't we draft Chad Henne in the second round?''

Interesting...
