Can former Giants tackle Luke Pettigout solve Miami's LT problems?

Many players have tried to solve this dilemma since the end of the Richmond Webb era but we are no nearer at solving this issue. McIntosh and Shelton both are good players but neither of them are truly rock solid. Should Alabi be given a shot? Still seems to early for him but he could be the long term answer.

So Shelton was signed as an upgrade over D-Mac yet went on to lose his place, to McIntosh, and ended up a RG. D-Mac is a free agent and is probably the best of the free agent bunch, so if Miami want him back, then he will cost !! Luke Pettigout is a free agent and could probably be signed for the veterans minimum salary for one year, which would help Miami upgrade elsewhere on the roster in 2007.

Before his season ending injury, Pettigout was having a steller season and would of probably ended up in Hawaii at the seasons end. So the big question is, can Pettigout solve the left tackle issue that has dogged Miami since the end of the Webb era?

I serious doubt that you will get Pettigout for the minimum when he was a 5 million $$$ a year player....maybe 4 million
to sign him but not much less depending upon how many other teams throw money his way!

Your premise isn't making sense. If Pettigout was having a stellar season before the injury, why would you even think he could be had at a veteran's minimum, especially given that he is a good player at a key position?

If his broken leg is healed, and he has basically the same mobility he had before the injury, there's no way some team won't give him a nice contract. And if he doesn't regain his mobility, then what's the point?

Petitgout is no more than a risky stop gap. He plays dumb and gets a ton of penalties. He is probably better than McIntosh on ability, though. If we don't draft a LT in the first round, he my be someone who can man the spot for a year or two.

Fair point.

If he has regained full mobility, Im sure he could sign on the minimum salary with a bonus structure based on starts etc which could obviously lead onto a more LT type pay packet.

You honestly think that after making 5 million a year that if healthy he would take league minimum:sidelol:

No no no. Players sign for minimum salary ONLY if there isn't much of a market for their services. There's always a market for a good LT.

I don't think anyone is saying Petitgout is the long-term answer. That said, w/ an underwhelming set of LT's available, he'd be at least a decent upgrade over what we have right now. He could fill that spot for 2-3 years while we try to find a long-term answer through draft (hopefully) or FA in the future.

What we have just doesn't work consistently, even if the group did play better as the season went on.

He'll certainly command more than the league minimum, but coming off his injury, perhaps he'll come somewhat cheaper, or at least come w/ incentives attached to playing time, etc.

Bottom line is, if Mueller and Co. think he can be an upgrade, we can certainly afford his services.

He is worth looking at, since it was his dislike for Tom Coughlin that got him cut from the Giants, not a lack of ability. There will be demand for him, but perhaps Miami can structure a deal that looks good "on paper" but in reality is a one year trial. A modest signing bonus with a big roster bonus in 2008 for example on a four year deal.

If he pans out, he is worth LT money, if not, you cut him and move on.

If LT gets resolved BEFORE the draft? Then the options are WIDE OPEN. Assuming Quinn doesn't fall (and I don't believe he gets past the Vikes or Texans) then it becomes OLB (Patrick Willis?) or CB (?) or a WR or maybe DT.

A trade down to get a third or fourth would be fine too. IF there is no clear answer at LT, then you almost have to get Levi Brown.

Offcourse he should if his leg is healthy. He's an average starting left tackle. We haven't had anything resembling that.

Since LT is about as important as QB, if not just slightly less it's like upgrading from Charlie Frye as your QB to Byron Leftwich.

I don't know the stats,But i think he made a crap load of false start penalties the last few years.Plus he might be too expensive.Let some other team pay him top dollar.

Petigout has been dogged with inconistency his whole career, has been moved to RT and even to G, he struggles with penalties and lest we not forget he's coming off a very bad leg break.
