PFF 2023 NFL offensive line rankings:

LT Terron Armstead (77.6)
LG Liam Eichenberg (39.8)
C Connor Williams (78.5)
RG Robert Hunt (72.3)
RT Austin Jackson (57.9)

- Can Butch Barry unlock Eichenberg and Jackson?
- Will Wynn make a push to start or serve as Swing T?
- Does Miami resign Williams and Hunt?
- Can Armstead limit unavailability to 2-games?
- Will Hayes develop or spend year on PS?

Yes, I know few people here are fans of PFF, but on Sunday? Night Football, when players are introduced, PFF rank is given. I'm always interested how often many top teams have a ~20th ranked OLman - maybe two. Given that, AJax isn't an anomaly it the 'typical' OL. Liam is the concern. I'm hoping a new year will help him a lot, but he has a steep hill to climb.

I don’t think there is anything to unlock with Eich. He is exactly who a lot of us saw on his college tape. Clumsy, slow processing, poor punch and hand placement, no anchor, etc… His best position is on the bench to completely honest. A back up interior to be used as sparingly as possible.

Some here told me I was wrong and his 22 tape was promising. So I went back and watched the games he played. Honestly, I have no idea what those people are seeing. Just to be sure I wasn’t being overly subjective I went and watched tape from his rookie year for comparison. There wasn’t a noticeable difference except one year was mostly at tackle and the other was mostly at guard. He was still slow to process and react and his poor footwork and lack of anchor caused him to be bullied far more often than not.

People point to the position swap and say he needs time to learn. Sure he can learn, sure he can get better. However I seriously doubt Barry is going to be that guy to help him develop and his ceiling is replacement level to average IMO. Is that worth the effort or should we try again with a guy who at least has some positive traits to build around?

Can't complain about being ranked 20 right now. I think we can get to around middle of league though with some decent coaching and luck regarding health.

Oline has a lot of question marks from some having limited athletic ability, to others ability to just stay healthy. I can understand where some would rank us towards the bottom of the middle.

20. MIAMI DOLPHINS (UP 2)

Projected Starting Lineup

LT Terron Armstead
LG Liam Eichenberg
C Connor Williams
RG Robert Hunt
RT Austin Jackson

  • Miami’s line improved last season, but they haven’t attacked the weaknesses as much as they could have this offseason. Adding Isaiah Wynn does provide an upgrade in Terron Armstead insurance, however.
  • Austin Jackson and Liam Eichenberg are significant weak links on paper, with Eichenberg earning a 39.8 overall PFF grade last season.

Best Player: Terron Armstead

  • When on the field, Armstead is one of the best in football, but he played in 14 games last season and missed time in others. At this point, his baseline is around 75% availability.

This is a fair ranking. They say we have not addressed the weak links as much as we we could have which many here have posted.

McD had to make this choice for a reason. He has to look at scheme and fit along with watching miles of tape to go with seeing our players live in every game and practice. I watch all games and film with reading many analyst's reports but I am net even in the same zip code as McD.

I do expect another improvement with the new coach and a year with the ZBS. We shall see.

To me this is all on coaching. Some players were asked to do things they clearly can't and were left exposed. It's not as if Eich and Jackson have no talent. They were high draft picks for a reason and would have been picked up soon after by another team if we didn't take them. Not all players have all the tools in their bag right out of college. If you coach them as if they do you're setting them up for failure. And don't get me started with the previous regimes coaching of "let the defense hit you first".

Hopefully this year coaching schemes properly for the talent the Fins have on the OL versus what they hope can happen.
IMO the "we just need better players" group is just being simplistic and they're wrong.

Opps, typo, my bad. I meant the other guy
Butch Barry..... Yeah, hoping for the best, but there are certainly questions with the guy.

He really only has the one season in Denver as the top guy.

He has been an NFL assistant Oline coach for a few seasons, and has a local connection with the Canes.

Hopefully he learned a little about handling players at this level.

Agreed. The notes thing is a little weird.

But hey, we shall see and hopefully he learned like u said

I have some confidence that AJ can be a solid RT, he looked decent in what was a small sample size last year to give us some hope he will contribute.

I am going to need to SEE Eich improve before I believe it, he has been bad wherever they put him.

For me the best case scenario is AJ takes the RT spot and Wynn plays LG.

And we get a healthy season for once.

First off, guy who wrote the article doesn't have the starting line up correct.

Eichenburg is no longer the LG. That's now Wynns spot. Eich will be the backup G/C.

I want to remind everyone that I've been Austin Jackson's biggest hater in the entire world, but he looks incredible right now. He's lost so much body fat it's almost unbelievable. For the first time in my life I'm actually comfortable with Jackson starting on this Oline.

Armstead really pisses me off bc he hasn't even made it through a season healthy. There are 4 things that are certain in life, Death, Taxes and Tua and Armstead getting injured every season. If those 2 stay healthy all year were winning a superbowl I have no doubt. Odds on them both staying healthy all year are prob 1/1,000,000 however.

We lack depth on the oline and that's gonna be our downfall if we don't win it all this year. It's likley too late to fix this now so we just need to prey that everyone stays healthy and Williams comes back to play center.

I'm thinking along those same lines.

Austin Jackson looks like he's put the work in. He's physically impressive.

Eichenberg will always just be the guy we passed on Creed Humphrey for.

As an Ohio State fan, gotta say, I don't even like Tommy Eichenberg, star LB and younger brother of Liam. I'm holding a grudge there too.
