Pff: Dolphins Were A Top 10 Pass Blocking Team In 2017

I've been saying this for weeks, months even. The o-line issues are greatly exaggerated on here since the beginning of the Gase era. I think we've given up less sacks that the Super Bowl winning and runner up Patriots in both season and Tom Brady is really, really good at avoiding sacks (far better than anything we've had). Our line is not the best in the NFL, not even close, but it's also not the biggest problem with the team like some have made it out to be. Thing is, it should be even better in 18.

Wow....a top 10 pass blocking unit and a veteran QB along with what a few on this site deem an elite pass catcher....add to that the emergence of Drake in the second half of the season (so run blocking must have been decent)....what an offense...our defense must have been pretty bad

I'm not sure if the ranking is correct or if the writer just wanted to take a jab at us for Pouncey....anyway I think we are a better team this season

If you just look at stats you might think we were top 10.

604 pass attempts - 4th most
33 sacks - 11th best

Lots of passes but not a lot of sacks. They are failing to take into account Cutler giving up on the play and throwing it away at the slightest pressure. I'd put us somewhere in the middle.

Consider as well:
  • Daniel Kilgore's PBE was suppressed by rookie QB C.J. Beathard's awful string of games in 2017. Beathard held the ball longer (which is supported by the time to throw data), took more pressures generally (also supported by the data), and as a consequence virtually all of the OLs on the 49ers saw significant dips in their PBE during the stretch. If you were to exclude that stretch and just include the time Kilgore blocked for Brian Hoyer and Jimmy Garoppolo, he was one of the highest PBE centers in football.

  • Jesse Davis's PBE during the time when he played right guard, his position in 2018, was above-average for a right guard.

  • Ja'Wuan James missed 8 games in 2017. During the 8 games he played, he was Top 5 among all tackles in PBE, and even higher among right tackles.
What does that all tell us? It tells us that the line was already decent in PBE, lost a good PBE center in Mike Pouncey but gained a good PBE center in Daniel Kilgore in his place, did a significant PBE upgrade at left guard with Josh Sitton, will hopefully get one full season out of an elite PBE player Ja'Wuan James instead of just 8 games, have a second-year starter Jesse Davis playing in his most efficient PBE spot, and Tunsil heads into his second year in the NFL playing left tackle.

So yeah, Miami has every reason to believe the pass protection will be fantastic in 2018.

Run blocking? We will find out. I like that they kept Jesse Davis around as I know he's a positive for run blocking, as is Ja'Wuan James. Laremy Tunsil is up and down, as are Kilgore and Sitton.

Jay Cutler's throwaway percentage (throwaways divided by attempts) ranked 22nd out of 40 qualifying QBs in 2017. This was not the factor you say it was.

sure didn't look that way watching the games. Tracking pressure and throwaways is subjective to the person doing the analysis.

I'm guessing PBE means pass blocking efficiency?

The OL is obviously much improved from years past where we had a bunch of revolving doors masquerading as o-linemen. I do wonder though how much all of the short passes play into this ranking. I mean idk how long on average it took us to get the ball out of the QB's hands last year but you'd think with all of the screens, and short stuff to slot wr's that it would be lower than average.

You got a link for this? I have to know the context behind that stat. If that's not playing scared I don't know what is.

The offensive line wasn't the season killing train wreck it's been in years past ... which is pretty amazing considering the circumstances. And that unit should be even better this year. So that's good. But Cutler did not help their cause per what I consistently saw last year.

I can't remember when the last time our offensive line was set this early in the preseason. Last year, Pouncey's inability to practice with the team hurt. I may be wrong but I think this is a huge factor going into the season this year. At the very least it will help reduce pre-snap penalties and allow for the quick tempo offensive we've been waiting for.

So many ways to run with this.

1. I agree, we have very good talent at the tackles, some sturdy guards etc in the interior with some decent depth there and on the outside tackles we have some backup potential too. I am interested in the rookie free agent tackle, I believe named Davis we picked up last year. I am a believer that a good oline takes time like wine and gets better with some age.
2. Interesting Pouncy being ranked so high last year with all the bashing by the puntiffs on this board.
3. Top 10 on the oline and we go 7 9, Pats ranked 23rd oline and almost win the super bowl.
4. Scratch off the oline excuse this year, plus RT stays healthy and we don't improve dramaticly on offense then some heads are going to roll.
