Pro Football Focus’ Dolphins-Cowboys grade book is out and it was more negative than positive for the starting offense.
While left tackle Branden Albert (+3.3) and receiver Mike Wallace (+1.8) were the top-graded Dolphins offensive players, many of the starters struggled.
Rookie right tackle Ja’Wuan James (-2.4) had the lowest grade of Dolphins offensive starters. Second-string quarterback Matt Moore (-2.8) was the lowest overall player on offense.
Starting quarterback Ryan Tannehill (-2.3), left guard Daryn Colledge (-2.2), right guard Shelley Smith (-1.8) and receiver Brian Hartline (-1.2) all graded “in the red” meaning they had a bad performance.
After Albert and Wallace, running back Damien Williams — who is making a strong case for a roster spot — had the next highest grade on offense (+1.6).
Backup left guard Billy Turner (+1.4), reserve lineman David Arkin (+1.2), running back Knowshon Moreno (+1.1) and backup lineman Nate Garner (+1.0) were all “in the green” for good performances.
On defense, only four players were in the green.
Defensive ends Cam Wake and Dion Jordan led the Dolphins defense with a +3.1. Cornerback Jamar Taylor, who has slipped below Will Davis on the depth chart, was next at +1.4.
Safety Reshad Jones, who is suspended for the first four games of the regular season after failing a drug test, had a +1.2. Jordan is also suspended for the first four games of the season.
Only two Dolphins defensive players were in the red — Davis and linebacker Philip Wheeler both had a -1.4.
Right guard Dallas Thomas, who had a historically bad -9.9 last week, was just out of the red on Saturday with a -0.9. Thomas is rotating with Shelley Smith, who started the game and had a worse grade than Thomas with a -1.9.
James, Miami’s first-round pick who had positive grades in the first two preseason games, struggled in pass protection with a -1.9. His -0.7 run blocking is considered in the average range and was actually his best run blocking performance yet. James has been much farther ahead in pass pro.

God I hate PFF at times. Sometimes you are like they are spot on but the Dion Jordan grade makes me laugh as does the Taylor grade.
I agree with the Wake rating

Dion Jordan wasn't bad last night. Seriously. Didn't he force like two holding penalties after just smoking his guy?

I do too but a lot of posters here don't and some live by it so I figured I would post it.

I think they're generally pretty accurate...slightly off sometimes, but generally in the right ballpark. One miss-judgment could skew the results to an extent though.

One of the problems grading pre season is you have a Wake with a 3.1 grade
who played against starters versus Jordan who graded the same against inferior competition

500 yards of offense with everyone playing horribly. Oh boy! Can't wait.

Well of course you have to take that into consideration. They grade the individual play, within game situational context, but not competitor level. And they grade all activity, even if it's cancelled by a penalty or otherwise unsuccessful, for instance, Will Davis had a very low grade, but had really only given up one catch for a 1st down (and giving up a catch that gets a first down is graded harder against the d-back), but he also got burned hard on a double-move (his specialty), however the pass was long overthrown. Just because it was incomplete doesn't mean Davis did his job. I think that's a fair way to look at it.

On the offense, the following players graded VERY WELL (in order from best to lower):

Branden Albert, Mike Wallace, Damien Williams, Billy Turner, David Arkin, Nate Garner, Knowshon Moreno

And the following graded positively:

Orleans Darkwa, Gator Hoskins, Samson Satele, Ryan Spadola, Damian Williams, Charles Clay, Jarvis Landry, Sam Brenner, Kyle Miller

The rest were below average to poor.

Grain of salt required, some are against 2s/3s while others are against starters...you just have to differentiate for yourself.

I mentioned it in the thread about the PFF RG grades. The idea is good, but the people grading for the site think they invented football. Some of the things they say are just comical. Almost every article you will find something that doesn't make sense. I doubt anyone that works for PFF played football beyond JV in High School. Now, if they were to get ex players, coaches, scouts, to do the grading, I think the grades would be far more accurate. Tom Brady isn't a top 5 QB?????????? Get the **** out of here.

Brady wasn't top 5 last year. Career-wise, yes, not last year.

Absolutely he was. And they claimed he is no longer a top 5 Elite QB. He lost all of his top receivers, the defense was abysmal with the loss of Mayo and Wilfork and he STILL carried them to a 3rd AFC Championship game in a row. I'm as big of a Dolphin fan as anyone here, but I can't stand blind homerism. It's pathetic.

LOL...did that all by himself he did. All the way to the AFCC game. He was good, but wasn't near his top form, and not top 5 either. It's not homerism, it's fact. Look up his numbers:

- Not top 15 overall in QB rating.
- Not top 5 overall in yards.
- Not top 5 overall on PFF.
- Not top 20 overall in YPA.
- Not top 20 in completion %.

But you keep on swingin' from his sack. His best years are past and he will be declining soon. He "was" great, yes, but last year he wasn't. And save the tired old BS argument "didn't have any receivers," not many teams have a crutch like Gronk for even a few games a year, and his best buddy BB brought in those receivers, so unless you're going to say BB's an idiot, they had good enough talent on that offense. Everybody has injuries...it's no excuse.
