PFF Gradings: Chris McCain steps up

I may be wrong but in the NFL is there any lineman who wins in every play? That's the issue here. Thomas having trouble with McCoy is one thing but losing on every play? Not even Marc Columbo lost on every play.

Does PFF account for quality of opponent? Dallas thomas getting eaten alive by the best DT not named Suh wasn't unexpected but do the rankings account for how good the opponent?

Flipping the script; does the plus grades for McCain, Fede, etc account for the going against other borderline players?

Not that I'm in love with Thomas, but did you see the way McCoy was firing off the line at the snap? Holy ****. It was like he knew the snap count every play. He jumped the snap so well, fired with so much explosion, with so much leverage and balance on one of those TFL's that I had to rewind three times in amazement.

TY for perspective and context.

By the way, on the subject of Thomas, let me say this:

When the Bucs stunted McCoy onto Ju'wuan James, James handled himself credibly and actually blocked the man.

So yeah, it is possible to block McCoy. Dallas Thomas just isn't capable of doing it.
Whomever starts against Dallas will undoubtedly look like they belong. There really is not a good scenario when it comes to evaluating and deciding who should start between Thomas or Turner, given the remaining competition. Thats troubling.

The thing I like about McCain, is that he brings a load when attacking lead blockers/sets the edge. Additionally, he has great position and leverage when he does so - this is hard to teach and he has a natural tendency to it and extremely physical.

I also noticed him playing LDE with his hand in the dirt on a few plays and had pretty good pash rush abilities.

Now - on the flip side, he does tend to get lost in space a bit, but I think that's more to do with understanding the scheme than not having a clue how to play in space, so I'm excited to see where this goes.

This might be far fetched, but I'd very much like to see McCain at WILL, Tripp at MIKE and dare I say it, Jordan at SAM. This would be a pretty dynamic and unusual set of athletic LB's. Ah... one can only dream

Yeah, that was the stunt I mentioned on James in the 1st quarter that stood out to me as well done. Also, Colledge held up on the first 5 snaps vs McCoy before he flipped over to Dallas.

You'd expect dallas thomas to win against mccoy every once in a while, but that never happened. some plays he didn't even get a hand on him. It was bad. Really, really bad.

starks, Mitchell and odrick should just double and triple team Thomas during practice, for a good 30 minutes. then line him up one on one, and hopefully his confidence won't be shot. lol maybe that would help.

A few other things of note.

The team improved from 12 missed tackles to 5. Delmas had 2, and Wilson the bib one saved by Grimes.

Michael Thomas led special teams with 2 solo tackles, and a +1.0 grade.

Ellerbe had a -1.6 in cover.

Wheeler was average, had a QB hit and hurry and 1 missed tackle.

Wallace got a -1.5 in receiving, thrown to 3 times- 1 not catchable, the drop, and the long ball. I'm guessing he got a -1.0 on the drop, and a _0.5 on the long ball.

Tannehill got a -1.6 in passing, and an 88.4 from the NFL. PFF had him at 9 of 14 for 110, with 1 sack and 1 drop. It was not an impressive performance from RT but, thought he deserved a little better grade. Gonna have to re-watch. Your thoughts?

i like it but in that scenario why Jordan at strongside backer?

Yeah, talk about coming back from adversity. Did Benton not give him any help from Satele on purpose? Even Greise said you need to double team him every play, the guys a 1st team All Pro vs a guy who played 2 NFL snaps.

Anthony Johnson DT, Chris McCain LB and Damian Williams RB were all undrafted and outperforming much higher draft picks. Just goes to show you how innacurrate the draftnicks are. I think all three will make the 53, and possibly two will start at some point this year. Good job Hickey!

FWIW, Dallas is now ranked #114 of 114 of all OG's this preseason. Colledge is #97, and Smith #42.

On the bright side, James is #68 at OT but #2 in pass blocking.

In fairness, we just put 5 new players together on the oline, there is going to be some ugly moments early no matter who we have playing.
