So according to PFF we have a very good D line, poor O line, good secondary, and ok skill players. Yup, didn't see that coming.

If Grimes covers Watkins the majority of the game and he ends up with 32 yards receiving, that to me is a key contribution to winning the game.

What PFF doesn't take into account is the strength of the matchup. Playing Sammy Watkins to a stalemate results in a 0.0 grade, which may not look impressive, but to those who know football is freaking impressive, considering Watkins has singlehandedly destroyed teams (including ours) this year. No matter how you grade, there are always going to be limitations.

When you grade a player, it's not only on what actually happened. It's also about what shoulda happened. Use the RT dropped pick as an example. It did not count but in grading it was the same as a drop from a WR. Grimes was not his special self this game.

Agreed. Grimes was burnt a few times (and against someone as strong/quick as Watkins, that's going to happen) but we didn't always pay the price. But there were also a few times he covered Watkins pretty well too. Overall, it leads to a neutral grade which, considering the caliber of the opposition, is actually impressive. The last two weeks, Grimes has been +1.1 against Megatron and -0.4 against Sammy Watkins - can't complain about those grades against those opponents.

Grimes was "burnt" ONCE!!! Show me the "few" times? I'll wait.

He was burned deep that one time, but the pass was overthrown. I think he did an excellent job overall, though. As to PFF, it's disappointing to learn they don't weigh strength of opposition or difficulty of assignment. It seems like an essential part of any eval.

I watched the tape tonight. As I expected, the TV version didn't show a few plays in which Watkins beat Grimes but the ball never arrived, or was improperly targeted. It was hardly merely the one deep ball in the 4th quarter.

That aspect of the game is the one TV simply can't cover adequately. At the venue you get a far superior feel for the way the game is being played in the secondary. It never fails to surprise me how much the TV coverage can differ.

I'm surprised by the high positive grade on Cameron Wake. Makes no sense. He was having so much trouble with Seantrel Henderson the Dolphins eventually realized it and gave Wake a much needed breather. Henderson is a very poor matchup for Wake. Henderson is naturally bigger and every bit the athlete. Consequently Wake is easily nullified on play after play. By early 4th quarter Wake was having so much trouble his energy level had sagged noticeably. Shelby entered the game and had much greater burst and energy against Henderson than Wake had shown since early in the game. Then after Wake got a rest he was markedly more effective in the later stages of the 4th quarter. He got around Henderson and nearly missed a sack at the 4 minute mark. Then just inside the 3 minute mark he again got the angle on Henderson, who should have been called for a holding penalty.

Perhaps those late game bursts saved Wake's grade. If so, it's ridiculous. There is no chance he was the best Dolphin defensive lineman out there for the entirety.

I didn't see a grade for Earl Mitchell. His primary weakness is short yardage. Instead of stuffing the man across from him Mitchell always chooses to slant one direction or the other. Invariably he runs himself smack out of the play and leaves a crater. That's why so many short yardage runs up the middle succeed against us, often for 5+ yards. I was very pleased when Buffalo somehow decided to run outside on 3rd and short in the 3rd quarter. Jamar Taylor bullied that one in the backfield. Makes no sense why an opponent wouldn't target Mitchell on every short yardage play.

Yeah, Wake was pretty non existent in the 2 games against the Bills this year. Need him to step up his play next week to have a chance to win

i am not as worried about wake against the broncos as i am our secondary.

they are going to have to have the game the o-line had against buffalo thursday night to win. they have to play lights out.

however......, we are banged up big in the cb department. and even the depth is hurt. and we all know peyton manning is NOT kyle orton.

and the broncs do not have the defense that buffalo has, especially the front four. the broncs wont be able to rush 4 and leave a zillion guys out in coverage. they will have to stunt and blitz much more and i see a big miami advantage in that. but, in a shootout, even though tanny is playing damn good ball right now, a shootout favors manning big time.

we have beat the broncs with manning before with a lesser offense and defense than we have now. but, peyton can hit his guys down field blind folded so this game is going to be decided by the miami secondary. they have to have the guts and swagger the patch work o-line had against the bills to win it.

or even be in it. it could be ugly real quick if this db unit comes out flat.
