PFF said Brent Grimes declined, NFL.com said he's still a top-5 corner

He DID decline...didn't fall off a cliff, but he certainly declined a bit. Still a beast though.
 
im not overly interested in the opinion of either
 
He went from top 5 to top 15. Still had a solid year, just tough to meet people's expectations after an elite first year.

You have to be realistic.. Grimes is not a TOP 5 corner...

The 5 best CB's in football - Richard Sherman, Darrelle Revis, Joe Haden, Patrick Peterson, Vontae Davis...

He is not better than Aqib Talib who's able to shut down WR and Big TE's. ... If anything he is Top 10 if he plays like he did in 2013
 
the reason he's on that list while being rated #30 of PFF is simple.

prestige and career standard level of production have a large influence in the standard ESPN, NFLN, CBS, etc...lists.

pff looks at individual plays, games, seasons in a vaccum, grades them, and doesn't get distracted by the name on the back of the jersey.

there's no doubt Grimes is arguably top 5 corner in the NFL, but that doesn't mean he had a top 5 year in 2014.

Vontae Davis is certainly not a better CB than Brent Grimes. Even though everyone seems to agree that Grimes wasn't as good in 2014 as in 2013, he still had one more interception (5 to 4) and one more forced fumble (1 to 0).

Comparing the 2014 Grimes to 2014 Davis, Grimes has more interceptions (5 vs 4), more tackles (47 vs 35), more touchdowns (1 vs 0), but fewer forced fumbles (1 vs 2) and fewer passes defended (13 vs 19). So, even in a "down" year he performed at least as good as Vontae Davis if not better.

Looking at those kind of stats when comparing corners is just flat out wrong. The stats I'm concerned with when it comes with corners is completion percentage against, quarterback rating against and touchdowns given up.

I'd rather a corner get fewer interceptions but have blanket coverage than have a corner that got more interceptions and was a liability in coverage. (not saying that Grimes is a liability, just providing perspective).

I love Grimes, but I think I'd rather have Vontae as a player.
 
Vontae hasn't given up a touchdown in over a year. The only telltale stat between the two when comparing.

As for the earliear post about prestige/standard of play, Miami defensive players have not been identified nearly as often as other markets for a while now eg Cam Cameron, Will Allen, Yerimiah Bell, Reshad Jones, etc . Vontae being on a playoff team with a marquee player at the helm is getting plenty of recognition.
 
while on the former Fin stream-of-thought, has Sean Smith actually developed into something special or is he just benefitting from KCs overall quality D? Read something about him going toe to toe with Maclin, goading Alex Smith into an errant pass/pick, but then again that's Alex Smith.
 
thinking about all these former bodies we had at our disposal, but obviously not the player they are today, really should allow some folks to question their hasty judgment of youth on this site. then again, that Jimmy Smith special on NFL network is doing things to me right now.
