Perhaps no NFL team faces a more difficult 2016 free agency period than the Miami Dolphins. A cornerstone on both the offensive and defensive side of the ball are set to hit the open market—HB Lamar Miller and DE Olivier Vernon—and the Dolphins lack the cap space to guarantee they’ll return to the team next season. Despite preseason projections picking Miami as the most likely challenger to the Patriots in the AFC East the Dolphins won just six games and finished at the bottom of their division. New head coach Adam Gase had his work cut out filling holes in the 2015 roster, let alone replacing two of last season’s standouts. Previous decisions dictate that the Dolphins will have to find value in free agency this year, far from an easy task.

How much money is Miller going to want? If he leaves, Ajayi needs a legit backup in case he gets hurt. How much is that backup going to cost?

And I disagree with letting both Vernon and Miller walk. As bone-headed as Vernon can be, you shouldn't let an emerging 25-year old top edge rusher leave in free agency. And personally, I'd rather keep Miller over Matthews, but both can be replaced with players already under contract.

At the very least for Vernon you put the non-exclusive franchise tag on him so you can get something for him if he leaves.

A "non-exclusive" franchise player must be offered a one-year contract for an amount no less than the average of the top five cap hits at the player's position for the previous five years applied to the current salary cap, or 120 percent of the player's previous year's salary, whichever is greater. A non-exclusive franchise player may negotiate with other NFL teams, but if the player signs an offer sheet from another team, the original team has a right to match the terms of that offer, or if it does not match the offer and thus loses the player, is entitled to receive two first-round draft picks as compensation.

I dont agree we should let them walk. It all depends on what the salary competition is. Have a amount that we will not go over and stick to it but dont assume we will lose them.

clearly this will be another damned if we do damned if we don't. I guess our forum will fill up with threads about how we let pro bowlers slip away or how we overpaid to keep them.

OV is overpriced. Miller is pivotal for this offense.

Re-sign Shelby. Have a rotation with Shelby, Wake, Fede, Chris McCain, and a rookie like Bronson Kaufusi.

With the extra money, you can get another rotational D-tackle and several other starting-caliber players on the defense.

I'd rather have solid corner and linebacker than OV.

I think we should let Vernon, Miller & Mathews walk. Vernon makes too many boneheaded mistakes too get elite $. Miller is good, but backs can be found both in the draft & free agency. I like Mathews, but we have enough invested in the WR position.

They keep clinging to the idea that we can't open up cap space, I guess it makes for a better story

Yeah, right.. makes perfect sense.

With as many holes as we have, let's allow Miller and OV to walk -2 young up and coming studs who are already among the best in the league at what they do, replacing them with FAs on the downside of their careers and unproven draftees. Makes perfect sense

I see this from both sides, you want to keep your talent obviously.....on the flip side, we are strapped for cash and have larger glaring needs at Guard, LB, and corner. If we just sign these guys, or even one of them; it limits what we can do at those other positions, besides the draft. That basically leaves us at status quo, which isn't going to cut it. If we keep one, I think it should be Vernon as running backs are easier to find and have a short shelf life.

Miller is expendable.

OV is 25 a edge rusher in his prime, still getting better.

Yea let's invest in a #3wr and RB who has been outplayed at certain times by other rbs on the roster, be it Ajayi or Moreno.

Moreno played one game. And Jay did not outperform Miller. I don't think it's the end of the world if Miller ends up leaving but he's improved and been a big part of our offense for a few years. Your post doesn't reflect the reality of how those two have played versus Miller.
