On Thursday morning, a report emerged in the Palm Beach Post that Dolphins G.M. Jeff Ireland informed his scouts in December that the team would be switching from a 3-4 to a 4-3 defense. It appears that the report was based on remarks from Ireland at the Senior Bowl.
On Thursday’s edition of PFT Live, Armando Salguero of the Miami Herald explained that Ireland’s comments were slightly broader than that. Per Salguero, who was admirably reluctant to take issue with the Post report despite my best efforts to instigate trouble, said that Ireland in reality said he told the scouts in December to be ready for either defense.
“If we had to go to a 4-3 or stay in a 3-4, we have some personnel that we could make a pretty good transition,” Ireland said. “There’d be some pieces we need to find. We have good personnel to do either one. I’ve prepared our scouts especially in December when we made a [coaching] change that we need to be looking at 4-3 personnel if that was to take a change. We’ve been looking at it for a while. It’s mainly linebackers and defensive linemen that you’re really looking for. We’ll make that transition if we go that route. It’s not going to be that big a transition.”

A bunch of smoke, nobody knows anything. I think it is pretty obvious Miami has went more hybrid 3-4 more than ever this past season and with 3-4 ends like Starks, Odrick and McDaniel and Soliai a UFA, all this mumbo jumbo seems to be the GM trying to gain leverage on current players/FA's.

Why would we come out and say anything worth merit about this when we don't have to. Who cares if Mel Kiper or Mike Mayock can't figure out what we are doing on defense. Evaluate everybody and take the best football player, regardless of the scheme. Good football players make plays in all schemes.

I have said from the start that Coyle has a 3-4 history.

In the end, I think they can play either D. The key is adding more pass rush.

In typical fashion people jumped the gun and also in typical fashion many wanted to paint Ireland as a control freak. In reality he was doing his job by letting the scouting department know that they should be prepared for the new coaching staff, not knowing whether the new D coordinator and HC would run a 3-4 or a 4-3.

Wake - Odrick - Starks - Coples Would be a killer Dline for pressure up he middle. I would love it. And for if we want to go against Run heavy teams then use either langford or Soliai

i was all ears untill i saw this.......................

took the air right out of it.

Every time I see you post this on draftcountdown, I want to "thank" you, but then I realize it's not finheaven and I can't. lol

I personally love the idea of a 4-3, if we can draft Coples

Well it makes a huge difference from a personnel standpoint especially at NT & DE. You need a NT that can handle double teams i.e. Soliai and DE that can play 5 technique where they handle 2 gap responsibility as opposed to only handling one gap responsibility in a 4-3 scheme. Finding 3-4 and 4-3 front line players that are interchangeable is not an easy task, which is why most teams commit to one scheme or the other.

This may be Ireland blowing smoke, the biggest clue will be what's done at the NT position

I love that idea as well. I think if we stay 3-4, upshaw should be the pick.

I would prefer if they stayed with the 3-4 as a base D.

We will be running most our formations out of a Nickel package anyways with the way the NFL is headed.

Pass rusher still needs to be a priority.

MIAMI can just about play EITHER "D" right NOW! The problem is the same for both types of "D": MIAMI needs one more pass-rushing OLB/DE. J TAYLOR's gone now: too bad, too, because he was excellent at BOTH. However you put it, MIAMI needs one more true pass-rusher. It's the best way to counter TOMMY BOY. Until that happens, MIAMI'll be an "also ran". Too bad, too!

I feel that there are only 3 or 4 real, true "needs" left. And QB isn't one of them! Today, QB is a desired plus, not a need which drives MIAMI to do desperate (and foolish) things. I wouldn't "mortgage the farm" for ANYONE, up to and including GOD Almighty. But if opportunity knocks, MIAMI would be foolish to not answer the door...AGAIN. If I moved up in the Draft, it'd be to about #4, which should be cheaper/easier than #2 or #1. And I'd be moving up for BLACKMON, not LUCK or RGIII.

The explanation given, makes perfect sense the scouts where told in December we know the courted Fisher a 4-3 Guy thus if they landed Fisher the focus would be find 4-3 talent.

With Coyle on board I'm sure they stay 3-4
