Word on the NFL street is that Vikings defensive coordinator Mike Tomlin had a "great interview" with the Dolphins this week, and the South Florida Sun-Sentinel reports that he will receive a second look. The interview is scheduled for Monday. (And, by the way, Wayne's plane hasn't left South Florida since Wednesday night.)

There also are reports that the Fins will narrow their list of 12 candidates to five, and conduct a second round of interviews.

Earlier on Friday, we posted some disparaging remarks from a league insider regarding the decision of the Cardinals to conduct a second wave of sit-downs with some of the candidates for their vacancy. (As one league insider later quipped, "Maybe they're going to interview Denny Green next.") So we suppose we can't defend the Dolphins by saying "they've got twelve candidates to consider" or "the first sessions weren't interviews but information-gathering sessions" (although we have heard that).

It's good that they're being thorough, but it's not like they're trying to determine whether the dude is spongeworthy. Meet 'em, do your homework, and make a decision.

I don't mind if we give him a second interview , just don't want us to hire this pup.

I was hesitant about Tomlin at first, thinking that he would want to bring the Tampa cover 2 here (which I don't think we have the right DB's for)....but was encoureged by this:

According to the St. Paul Pioneer Press: "Teams are realizing the Vikings aren't using the Tampa 2 too much. Sure, it's their base defense, but the Vikings mix in plenty of other schemes: Cover 1 (man-to-man coverage), a three-deep zone and zone blitzes. Really, the Vikings mostly use the Cover 2 in long third-down situations or when they're protecting a lead."

The more I read about Mike Tomlin, the more I like him. Currently, I'm 50/50 between him and Ken Whisenhunt.

I like Tomlin, i still want Cameron, but i like Tomlin. Part of me is hoping the patriots make fast work of the chargers tomorrow just so Cameron is free to hire within the next week, but I wouldn't be upset with Tomlin. He just better bring a good OC with him...

Tomlin seems to have good pedigrees and measurable success like Cammeron and Whisenhunt. Sounds like he knows how to be versatile and coordinate D systems that is suited to the strenghts of his team instead of trying to fit a square peg in a round whole like a certain O coordinator we now have in the organization. I've read and heard more about Cam and Whisenhunt and based on that I prefer them still at this time. Whoever we choose please let it be current NFL coaches / coordinators over the college re-tread guys

I wouldn't mind Tomlin as long as he doesn't run the Tampa 2 all the time and decides to play more of other defenses unlike Dungy and Herm Edwards.

You mean PFT, the first people to mention Saban going to Alabama?

They were absolutely right about that. But questioning the idea of second interviews suggests the writer doesn't have a grasp of interviewing and recruiting for high level candidates in business positions. WH is a business man first and second interviews are fairly common in the business world. I think the dude has just been waiting for a chance to use "spongeworthy".

in business when making a major hire a second interview is common practice. I have even situations where a third interview was required. As important as it is to get this right especially with our recent experience I think this is totally appropriate.

If the fins are so interested in keeping Capers here, why would they hire a much younger, much less experienced defensive guy to be their head coach?

I hope they get an offensive guy & keep Capers as DC...

And Shula and Marino are supposed to be in on the second round, which adds a whole new dimension to it.
