RICKY VIOLATION WAS A MISSED TEST

A league source tells us that Dolphins running back Ricky Williams violated the NFL substance abuse policy not through a positive test but by failing to report for a scheduled test.

Players who are subject to the drug program face regular requirements to submit to testing. Once notified of the obligation to provide a sample of kidney Kool Aid, the player has a specific time period within which to do so. (Per the drug policy, the player has four hours from the time of the scheduled test to produce an Italian astronaut.)

As a participant in Stage Three of the program, Williams is subject to up to 10 unannounced tests per month.

Meanwhile, The Miami Herald has revised its story regarding the failed test to leave the door open for the possibility that it was, indeed, a failure to show up for the test.

The difference is technical. Either action is a violation of the substance abuse policy, and a violation (for Williams) most likely will trigger a minimum suspension of one year. During the suspension, he still will be expected to submit to testing and other aspects of his treatment plan.

This is good news. Given the confirmation from Ricky's mom that he's in India, I've got to believe he went on vacation and missed a test. I think he'd have good grounds to appeal. Considering that Ricky has a test about every 3 days, that would mean that he's basically a prisoner of the NFL. It's really screwed up if true that the man can't even take a little vacation. I would think this would reflect worse on the NFL than Ricky if true, honestly.

LOL

Uh oh let all the " I told you so's" all the " HE BETRAYED ME" people start back pedalling.

Don't see how its good news. He put himself in that position by failing 3 tests to begin with, I don't think anyone will blame the NFL.

I just heard the news on Ricky. Did he fail the test or just miss it all together??

If this is true, then he or the Dolphins can appeal, and we're in for a debate. I understand the point of the surprise tests, but shouldn't that only count when you're in the United States? Even if he wanted to, how in the world would he pee in a cup and get it to the doping agency in four hours from India?

Maybe Ricky is not allowed to take vacations out of the States, which makes it sound suspiciously like he is on probation. Can the NFL really tell you not to leave town in the offseason??

You really don't see the problem with the NFL basically telling players not to venture more than 4 hours away from the testing site for the rest of their career? If Ricky plays for 3-4 more years, he's supposed to never leave the country, and always stay within testing distance?

I can see during the regular season, but to carry it over into the offseason is extreme in my book.

I could see if the NFL provided a mechanism of lowering your level in the drug program by means of good behavior... but to have no recourse for the rest of your career is harsh.

Do you think this will help Ricky's case at all? IMO, I don't really think so.

yeh, if he just honestly missed a surprise test, the NFL is gonna look absolutely draconian in this one

It wasn't a "surprise test". He's failed 3 already, he knows he gets tested every couple days now.

Knowing me and my attitude, I'd never make it through a program like that and I wouldn't have a second thought about telling the NFL to kiss my rear end.

I've always liked Ricky but come on people face it, these guys get paid MILLIONS to play a game. They know the rules up front, if the choose to break those rules they face the consquences. He put himself in the position to be tested every couple days by the NFL by failing 3 tests to begin with. Saban gave him a second chance and he blew it, plain and simple.

If this is the case the NFL will review its own policy. It's ludicrous to think the man can't take a vacation in the offseason. Their policy needed to be somewhat different during the offseason.

Does anyone know if the suspension would be a mandatory one year suspension or "possible" one year suspension?

Yes. Why would he leave the country, knowing this? I know it would suck to have the shackles put on like that, but like you said, he put himself in this position.
