Should we have let the clock run out on us when we were picking #2? Florio makes an interesting argument that this may have been the best course of action and that we still may have been able to get Ronnie Brown at a lower slot instead of being stuck in a position where we have to over pay for an unproven running back when proven running backs could be had for a 3rd round pick.

Thoughts?

It's so easy to look back and say we should have done this or that...AFTER THE FACT! Hey we should have drafted Randy Moss or Brees or a host of other people, but we didn't...deal with it!! (this is obviously not directed at poppy...just at the story itself)

I think the Vikings did that a few years ago with Briant Mckinny and they still ended up paying him after a half the season hold out.

I agree with most of the premise of the article except that letting the clock run out was not a realistic option.

Although I like Ronnie Brown as a player I think he was taken too high for a RB for the reasons explained in the article.

I was really hoping to trade down to the 4-5 spot AND draft Ronnie. But it was not possible.

The problem is that QBs historically get more than RBs in the first round of the draft and deservedly so.

The system does not differentiate among positions so Browns agent is seeking a package similar to what a QB would expect in the No 2 slot.

Thats one of the factors that is wrong wirh the system. The agent wants to get a package commensurate to the slot and the Dolphins are offering a package commensurate to the RB position .

100% Agree WITH NOODLE ARM....what Genius Wrote That Article. What if ronnie turns out to be a hall of famer....besides there were not any takers as we have heard over and over.....

I think Ronnie Brown was taken at the right spot relative to being the best player that was on the board. When there isn't a dominant quarterback, offensive lineman, defensive lineman, or cornerback available, you have no argument in saying that you shouldn't take a running back that high.

When you are comparing a running back to other running backs and a wide receiver, you take the player that is the best player. Miami did that. Ronnie Brown will affect the outcome of a football game more than any other player that was taken in the top 5-6 picks of the draft outside of Alex Smith.

I figured that three running backs going in the top 5 picks would quiet this talk about the 2nd pick being too high for a running back. If it is too high for a running back, it is too high for a receiver as well, and that was the only other option at that pick.

By letting the time run out, you run the risk of having the Browns take him.

It's not only a matter of the Browns taking him -- it's a matter of the Bears getting their card in before Miami gets there and Brown going there. Letting the time expire is a real risk that isn't worth the gamble.

Not to mention that Nick would look like a total idiot in his first ever draft, had he let the time run out because if you are letting the time run out so that you can fall a couple of positions in the draft, still get the guy you want, and you let that be known, you're going to have an agent pushing for the number two money anway which will lead to the same hold out.

If he doesn't let it be known, he looks completely incompetant.

To add onto all of the other responses. It could just make negotions even harder then they are. Once you do this you have the agent probably trying to say that he deserves #2 money because u were the #2 team.

EDIT: I was typing when In-Fins was just posting aparently.

I think the NFL was prepraed for this very thing happening this year. A lot of teams "thought" of this idea and the NFL had a memo come out a day or two before the draft saying if teams do this they will end up paying the guy they pick from their slot anyway, so don't try it.

Vikings tried this twice. BOth times they didn't save money.

When it happens it is still looked at as the #2 pick.

That notion was absurd and uneducated. Not the original poster of this thread but PFT for coming up with, yet again, more nonsense

The notion isn't absurd becuase a lot of NFL Teams were talking about doing this on draft weekend this year. The NFL had to address the issue that weekend.

That part of it makes PFT raising the issue now absurd, though.
