RYAN OUT OF THE PICTURE AT NO. 1?
Posted by Mike Florio on April 10, 2008, 4:37 p.m.
At a time when the Miami Dolphins are commencing negotiations with multiple candidates to be the No. 1 overall pick in the draft, there’s an unusual report in the Palm Beach Post suggesting that the Fins are limiting, not expanding, the field.
Edgar Thompson reports that Boston College quarterback Matt Ryan isn’t one of the persons on whom the team is focusing.
Thompson cites an NFL source for his report. And since Dolphins V.P. of football operations Bill Parcells is notoriously tight-lipped in matters of this nature, we can’t help but wonder whether the “NFL source†is Ryan’s agent, Tom Condon.
If our speculation in this regard is accurate, why would an agent do anything to decrease the pre-draft buzz regarding his client? Because Condon is likely smart enough to realize that he’s already in an awkward situation, given that the Dolphins already are negotiating with two of his firm’s client at No. 1 (Jake Long and Vernon Gholston) and that it will only get worse once Ryan is included in the mix.
Of course, the situation (again, if our speculaton — and it’s only speculation — is accurate) has the potential to assume sitcom-style craziness if the Dolphins indeed contact Condon to negotiate regarding Ryan, and Condon simply fails to tell Ryan about it while Condon makes a demand so high that the Fins are scared off.
Again. It’s speculation. The only thing we’re certain of in this regard is that, if Thompson’s source isn’t Condon, then Condon surely breathed a deep sigh of relief at the news.
