Philbin and Ireland were "not entirely convinced" he would beat out Moore (Flynn)

Ross said 49ers quarterback Alex Smith wanted to play in Miami, but he could not justify paying $8 million annually when Matt Moore - already on the roster with comparable production – could be the starter.

BTW - That fits with Dan LeBatard's information, that Alex Smith never received a contract offer from Miami.... so I don't understand where you're coming up with the information that Miami was "quite sold on him".

So now your theory is the owner is publicly LYING about what his brand new coach thinks of a player? Talk about being married to your opinion. lol

I dont believe for one minute that we didnt make that offer to Smith. Yea we brought in all these guys and somehow were going to sign them for way less than our asking price.
Believe that fairy tale if you like. Like many on this board believed that we just talked to Harbaugh for hell of it. Wow Im serious when i say some people will believe anything no offense

Real talk

What offer? I haven't seen anything not on a message board, or some vague twitter rumors that Miami ever made an offer to Smith. But Dan LeBatard says Miami stuck Smith in a hotel room... and kept telling him an offer was forthcoming, and then later called to say they were going in a different direction. Sounds just like Ross's story.

Yea we brought in all these guys and somehow were going to sign them for way less than our asking price.

I assume you meant "their" asking price? Why not? Cleveland had expressed ZERO interest in Flynn. There were stories everywhere that Seattle wanted Flynn to compete with Jackson to start there. Meanwhile Flynn's coach of the last four years is in Miami... why not take a shot and see if he might sign for less?

As for Smith, I think if Manning had signed in San Fran.... there's a darn good shot Smith would have signed for a lot less than he was offered and eventually signed for in SF.

Why is it so unbelievable that the plan all along (barring a Manning pipe-dream) was to add veteran competition for Moore - and draft a QB?

Yeah.... fairy tale. Meanwhile, believing Ross is lying about what Joe Philben thinks of Flynn... is a solid conclusion based on speculation, and unquestionable mind reading skills. lol

Like I said you keep believing we looked at three qb's for the hell of it. How many other teams chased every avail qb, nobody else. You believe what you want and I will believe what IU want. You find it logical that they looked at all these guys and figured they would get them for 5 mill a year when nobody thought any of these guys would sign for that. Hell we almost gave a 34 year old qb that was out of the NFL that much and you believe that what they offered everybody. You believe the one writer that supports your viewpoint, I doubt many people really think this was the case. Gotta love those phins though giving free agents free trips just to waste thier time, I think Im starting to understand why Peyton never even considered us. If they had so much faith in Moore they would not have chased these guys

Im just wondering how is it that only the pro dolphin stuff is looked to with any truth here, if anyone says different they are lying

Whats this "for the hell of it" jag? I saw a guy buy a Model A Ford on a television program the other day in PRISTINE condition, for 6 grand. Maybe he went to look just for the hell of it? lol

We looked at them because we needed QB help.

And what is it you believe? That Miami was panting to pay these guys as much or more than they signed for - and no one wanted to play for Miami?

As far as I know (beyond Manning)... Flynn and Smith only had 1 other offer each. San Fran was interested in Manning (and everyone thought they had a good shot), and Seattle had already informed Flynn he would have to compete with Jackson. Why not take a shot? Hell... you could end up with a $6000 Model A. lol

Hell we almost gave a 34 year old qb that was out of the NFL that much and you believe that what they offered everybody.

It's 1 million guaranteed for Garrard (1 year, 3.35 million cap hit) vs. 10 million guaranteed for Flynn (3 years, 4 million 1st year, 7.25 million 2nd year, 8.25 million 3rd year cap hits).

And BTW - Denver just gave 96 million to a 35 year old QB that was out of the NFL. lol

You believe the one writer that supports your viewpoint, I doubt many people really think this was the case.

Show me one who supports yours. Show me a credible writer with Miami's offer numbers to Alex Smith.

Gotta love those phins though giving free agents free trips just to waste thier time,

Gotta love those gullible pessimistic fans... yeah, the "vibe" in the building was just better - nothing at all to do with the money. lol

I think Im starting to understand why Peyton never even considered us.

You mean beyond the fact it's a first year coach, installing an offense that not only Peyton has never played in - but no one currently on the team has played in? What is it? Too many dumb#$% fans? :)

If they had so much faith in Moore they would not have chased these guys

Why is sitting down and evaluating Moore's work in 2011 - as compared to Flynn's two fabulous games in his entire career, and Alex Smith's one shining season which is comparable to Moore's and six more that were crap.... and deciding your not willing to give either starters money when you've got Moore - have to be described as having "so much faith" in Moore?

Smith was better than Moore last year esp in the turnover department. Ross has less faith in Moore than he had in Sparano last year.
No proof either way on contracts but when your top free agent is a 9 game safety starter maybe players are not that excited about being a dolphin.
We dont know either way what the offers were but the logic that these players would come here for peanuts is beyond silly

Slightly - I agree, in his BEST season in 7 years. But 6 million a season better? lol

Based on what?

No proof either way on contracts

Lets see.... the team owner, and a long time beat writer state the team never made an offer to Smith vs. a few twitter and message-board rumors stating they did = no proof. Okay. Got it. :)

I consider Paul Soliai their top free agent, and he took millions less than he could have made elsewhere to stay in Miami.

Since when is 5 million peanuts? lol

5 million is not peanuts but no way Smith came here to have that offered to him. You can believe what you want. As for a beat writer big deal we have alot of beat writers that say a bunch of things. As for Ross he has lied before so he has no integrity with me. In like a week we were all over any decent qb and if they were offering 5 million and competition than the fo is stupider than I think they already are.

As for Ross having less faith in Moore., Did we extend him no, are we willing to bring in guys to get paid more than him yes. You dont risk upsetting your qb by bringing in even matt Flynn at 5 mill if you have faith in Moore. Hell Garrard got a bigger contract than Moore. i dont want to hear about guarantees because Moore is guaranteed basically nothing too. Garrard can make 5 mill if he reaches incentives. if you think they offered Smith the same money as Garrrd could possibly make then feel free but nothing about that theory makes any sense.

As for Solai I dont think the market was as strong for him as many thought. I think he could have made slightly more but he did not seem to be the hot commodity that his agent thought he would be. You can best believe that if he could have made 10 mill a year elsewhere with 20 mill guaranteed he would have went elsewhere, he is not stupid. That being said great deal. gives him a chance to actually earn his money after overpaying for him last year. Pouha got 3 years 15 million 9.5 guaranteed and there really was no difference in their level of play.

Also back to the beat writer say so thats no proof. Did Ross make a statement that he never made an offer. I did not read that anywhere but even if I did he said the same crap last year. No proof we made an offer no proof we didnt.

Alex smith was in Miami because if Peyton signed he would have no market and we would sign him for far less then 8 million.

Obviously front office liked him more then Flynn which is kind of scary if ur a Seahawks fan

We will draft a QB probably Tannehil and he might not even have to sit much with him knowing Sherman's offense to the tee

Why would Smith have no market . other teams have qb needs. He visited us and like a day after Manning made choice so he signed with SF .

And he had to sign the same offer that had been on the table for weeks. also, a little known detail in the contract allows the 49ers to cut him after this season and only owe him $1 million dollars. He essentially came crawling back and got a one year deal
