Is Kevin Coyle the right coach to lead this defense? Our defense played great at times last year. As the season went on we slowly dwindled defensively, getting ran over slowly game in and game out. That is part personnel, part scheme. If he is our guy, he has to do a better job putting players in a position to make plays. He's got a dog in Suh and the holes in our defense our definitely fillable in the offseason. I can't stomach anything less than a defense ranked in the top 5 at the end of the year. If Coyle can put put players in a position to make plays we'll win those games we were in late last year.

As far as the offense, I think they played well last year. We were way too slow out the gate on both sides of the ball and that's Philbin's correction to make. I don't think Philbin is a bad coach. He's just not as aggressive as I'd like him to be in terms of game management and game time decisions, that has to change. We had a lot of third and short situations where we should've went for it. He has to make those calls, he also has to do a better job with challenges and timeouts. I don't know who he had in the booth calling challenges down to him. Whoever it was, he should've been fired. If you watched last years games you know we're close to being a contender. Like Philbin says, "it's the small things, the details." I'm looking forward to seeing us get after it, this year is our year! #refusetolose

Sure. If they play off coverage with this pass rush, we will get short gamed all the way down the field. They have to tighten up on the outside. No more bend, but do not break stuff.

Joe...

the way you worded the question makes me think you are looking for one type of answer

yes, they can

Of course... they can and will screw this up. They'll have our corners playing off coverage, have Suh stunting left right and center and have Wake dropping into coverage. ITS WHAT WE DO.

I'm not a fan of either. I'd imagine this is their last chance. I feel like this is a team finally ready to get over the hump. People act like we won 2 games last year. Both years we've been right there. Now we have Suh and we should be improved in other areas. If they can't get to the playoffs, it's time to move on.

We're not ready to get over any hump right now. The lack of depth and starters on defense is remarkable. We can celebrate the Suh signing all day but right now we still only have 3 DTs with experience (same as last year and they wore down as the season went on...think Suh won't wear down in the South Florida sun after having played in a dome?), we have no MLB, an unclear situation at SLB and no depth at linebacker, we have 3 CBs, two of which are coming off of injury and one of them hasn't stayed healthy yet in his two years in the league, we have one safety and not depth at either spot.

As of right now, despite the signing of Suh, our defense is worse than last years.

Well it's too early for predictions. FA hasn't even technically started yet. My point is that we aren't as far away as some people make it seem like. Despite all of our problems, we still won as many games as we lost for 2 years. A couple of plays go our way and we make the playoffs, and we were 1 win away in 2013.

And my point we're farther away than some people make it seem like...as of right now.

I wouldn't say farther. We're about the same. 7-8 win team that needs improvement. Suh is a step in the right direction.
