I just saw on NFL.com a very interesting suggestion that the botched field goal was actually a faked field goal attempt.
This video might prove it. Not sure who that is on the left side but he totally leaves his blocking position and heads up the field. I never really see that during a regular field goal attempt as the priority is to prevent a block.
The question is: would it work?
I think yes. With two Pats players double covering our player the entire left side was open for at least a 10 yard run. Don't be fooled by one of the Pats players coming back. By that time the ball was on the ground.
I might be completely wrong here but if I am right then I give kudos to our coaching staff trying to make a statement that early in the game.

The play is at the 0:14 marker.

Someone who was on the sidelines for the game posted in the game day thread on Sunday, sometime around halftime, that they overheard someone saying it was suppose to be a fake.

i cant watch the video at work but what player is going up field??? where in the alignmnt??? and who???

Well my the movement on the line and the way Sturgis approached Fields (doesn't look like he was in his kicking motion) it would suggest a fake.

Still wonder what Denney was thinking cause Fields didn't even have his hands up.

Hard to tell but it looks like Sims ran left and then turned upfield and Ellerbe looked like he was in a pass pattern in the middle of the field...Ellerbe was wide open too.

Egnew is on the left end, and he's going up field. Could be Sims but the quality is bad, but the skin tone looks to be about Egnew. Either way it's Egnew or Sims. You get the idea. The guy right next to the man on the end runs a little curl route. I think that is Dallas Thomas.

There is no question it was a fake field goal. You dont send the left side of the line if you aren't faking a field goal. The only person who missed their assignment missed practice that week giving birth to a new born and just missed the signal from the sidelines Brandon Fields and miss handled the snap count for the fake field goal.

It looks like a 18 on the jersey when I freeze it...that's Rishard Matthews but it's really hard to make out.

It was Dallas Thomas. Not Ellerbe.

Matthews makes sense. Same skin tone as Egnew.

egnew and sims were line up as the outside blockers, but didn't even make an effort to block anyone. they just released off the line into their routes
Rishard Matthews and Dallas Thomas is who it is.

egnew or sims makes sense...ellerbe however does not to me...egnew is usually a wide protector on fg teams if i recall correctly

interesting...anyways i heard the audible on the play and fields never says the snap it command word

Great catch! Definitely a fake. The two guys at the end of the line run patterns. The guy on the left is covered, but the guy on the right releases late and is likely open if Fields has enough time and accuracy to make the throw (doubtful).

wasnt it the guy on the right though who came in and would have hit fields on the play??? makes me think this would have been dicey to convert
