Back in 2009 The Green Bay Packers started the season very similar to the 2013 Dolphins.

The season started at 3-2 and after 5 games the Packers had surrendered 25 sacks in 5 games (one more then us)

Over the next few weeks the trend continued and the Packers were at mid season (4-4) and had given up 37 sacks in 8 games.

But over the course of the final 8 games they changed something, got it corrected and only allowed 14 sacks in the remaining 8 games.

The Packers went 7-1 in those games and made the playoffs.

It should be noted that the Packers defense that year was a lot better than what we have right now. 2nd overall and 7th in scoring.

But he has been in this situation before and found a way to correct it. Hopefully he can get Sherman to make some changes like they did in 2009.

I hope you're right. It's good to know there's a historical precedent for it under Philbin, at least.

And by the way, I thought the Ravens game on Sunday was Ryan Tannehill's best game to date, after going back and watching it again. I don't even feel compelled to argue that I think he is gonna be a good QB anymore.

He already is one. The only question I have now is how far he can take it. And I think that ceiling is going to be very, very high.

Agreed, Ryan played a hell of a game. They always talk about QB's having that bounce back game after having a stinker.
Even though the win-loss results weren't there i'd say it was a great bounce back game for Ryan.

The other interesting thing about the 2009 season comparisons is that it was at this stage that the lights turned on for Aaron Rodgers
He sat behind Favre for 3 years and then started in 2008 and went 6-10. Very similar to Ryan's 7-9 last year.
Then in his second year starting he was having issues being sacked to often and starting record dipped to 10-14, Ryan is 10-11 currently.
After Mid season in second year starting Rodgers has gone 44-14.
Lets hope history repeats itself.

We do know they replaced their right tackle about midway through the season:

And how many hits before he is in a wheelchair

I'm not trying to say that he can't right the ship, but he was an OC in 2009 not HC, there is a monumental difference between being the head honcho, and thereby ultimately responsible, and being just a part of the machine. That said, I would think the experience of going through that and observing how Mike McCarthy dealt with it should help him.

Ryan was really not doing that bad against the Saints early, in fact I thought Ryan was looking more effective then Brees, but Ryan fell into a Hornets nest, and once he made that mistake with that INT, With that Miami's O-line and pass-blocking problems, the Saints obviously started coming after Tannehill.

If Miami had not fallen behind so much, it might have been a different game, Ryan is going to be a very good QB, and as I have continued to say, he has still a lot of ceiling to reach his potential, which is pretty exciting.

I agree 100% T-Hill is looking like a pretty good QB and looks like a few other people are starting to see the light also:

I would like Philbin to be more assertive with his coaches. I know he respects Sherman and all that, but championship-caliber offenses don't spike the ball with a minute to go and only need 10 yards or so to put the kicker in decent range.

I heard last night that the Dolphins surrendered 35 sacks in the 1st 8 games with Incognito and Martin.
In the last 5 games with McKinnie with Garner we have only allowed 13 sacks.

After hearing that I had to bump this thread.
So just like with Rodgers a personnel change by Philbin on the line help drop the number of sacks.
That and combination of Ryan getting it out with a quicker passing game.
Funny how history can repeat itself

The passing game is doing much better. One of our worst games was when we allowed 6 sacks to Patriots.
I guess we will see how much we really have improved this weekend.

You never know Fins, you may be on to something...I hope.

Unfortunately, Philbin didn't learn anything from history! Some early losses may have been avoided if he had recognized that there was a problem as early as the preseason, when everyone else saw the poor performance of the o-line. He stood by watching the same situation unfold, and made no changes until midway through the season... again. What really bothers me is that he made no attempt to try out different personnel in a game until after the meeting with Ross. That meeting, and then the Martin/Incognito incident were the reasons for changing personnel. If those events had never happened, I'm sure that Philbin would still be fielding the same 5 guys on the line, and there would be no chance at the playoffs. Ireland shares some of the blame for not bringing in McKinnie sooner. Between Ireland, Philbin, and Sherman there seems to be a lack of decent evaluation skills when it comes to o-linemen.

The failure to fix the o-line earlier is just one of the reasons why I think Philbin and Sherman should go. IMO, the only reason that Miami is vying for a playoff berth is because of the talent on the field and not the coaching.

Sorry to burst the bubble, but Tom Clements and Mike McCarthy were the ones who ran the offense, not Philbin.
