Philbin has been here before

Unfortunately, Philbin didn't learn anything from history! Some early losses may have been avoided if he had recognized that there was a problem as early as the preseason, when everyone else saw the poor performance of the o-line. He stood by watching the same situation unfold, and made no changes until midway through the season... again. What really bothers me is that he made no attempt to try out different personnel in a game until after the meeting with Ross. That meeting, and then the Martin/Incognito incident were the reasons for changing personnel. If those events had never happened, I'm sure that Philbin would still be fielding the same 5 guys on the line, and there would be no chance at the playoffs. Ireland shares some of the blame for not bringing in McKinnie sooner. Between Ireland, Philbin, and Sherman there seems to be a lack of decent evaluation skills when it comes to o-linemen.

The failure to fix the o-line earlier is just one of the reasons why I think Philbin and Sherman should go. IMO, the only reason that Miami is vying for a playoff berth is because of the talent on the field and not the coaching.

You know the GM is the one responsible for bringing players in during the offseason, right? Its hilarious with you people, Ireland didn't have control before 2011 because the guy above him was calling all the shots and now he doesnt have control because the guy below him is calling all the shots.

and made no changes until midway through the season...
..

And what do you think precipitated the trade for McKinnie? Was it:

A) The o-line is decent enough but if you see an opportunity for an upgrade then by all means...

Or

B) Jesus ****ing christ, this is a god damn total failure!! This piece of **** o-line is ruining our season!! Our franchise QB may be ruined for life. GET US HELP NOW!!!

And the worst part is the line was completely healthy until the trade. Its one thing if you lose 4 or 5 starters and end up with the worst o-line performance in franchise history but thats not what happened here. This was straight up **** talent evaluation.

I heard last night that the Dolphins surrendered 35 sacks in the 1st 8 games with Incognito and Martin.
In the last 5 games with McKinnie with Garner we have only allowed 13 sacks.

After hearing that I had to bump this thread.
So just like with Rodgers a personnel change by Philbin on the line help drop the number of sacks.
That and combination of Ryan getting it out with a quicker passing game.
Funny how history can repeat itself

The passing game is doing much better. One of our worst games was when we allowed 6 sacks to Patriots.
I guess we will see how much we really have improved this weekend.

It's already been said, but I have to repeat it anyway. Those personnel changes were something that Philbin seemed to resist. On top of that, the guys who went through a camp with the team seemed to have learned nothing about blocking at this level. We had reason to expect better from Dallas Thomas, Martin, Samuda (cut because despite raves about his talent due to ineptitude in preseason), etc. I don't give Nick Saban credit for finally starting Yeremiah Bell in 2006 and him being a monster that year because he was also the guy who kept him on the bench for two years. When we are more competent with a guy like Garner in the starting lineup, it begs the question of why other guys were in the starting lineup so long when they were ineffective, and why he only started after the hand was forced.

Its apple and oranges to compare Garner-McKinnie to Incognito-Martin. Garner started 3 or 4 games at RT at the end of last season and I don't recall anybody saying we should let him start there again this season, or anywhere on the o-line for that matter. In other words, he's proven to be nothing special.

Nothing special is still a heck of an improvement over flat out terrible. I don't remember Garner being that bad at RT.
