Dolphins coach Joe Philbin spoke to the media on Monday, for the first time since kicker Caleb Sturgis suffered an injury while playing kickball. And while Philbin didn’t have much to say about it, he said enough to make it clear that Sturgis doesn’t bear any blame for it.
“Everything that happens from the minute they walk in here until the minute they leave is under my watch,” Philbin said, via a transcript provided by the team. “We do things strength and conditioning-wise. We do things classroom-wise. We do things on the practice field. We do things for team building and everything runs through me. That’s what happened.”

did he also blame himself for being an idiot and letting the worst kicker ever stay with this team?

Laces out Philbum

First good move philbin has made, now get us a real kicker.

I bash Joe to no end, but I am in the minority here on this one...I get it, but I cannot kill Philbin.

However, I do blame Sturgis. Who does not know his body more than the athlete himself? Homerun Derby competitors don't pull up lame. Dunk contest competitors don't tweak a muscle. It was a game of kickball and a kicker pulls a muscle. What was he trying to do with his "AB"?

This is not to the level of Jack Del Rio with the ax in the middle of the locker room. Sturgis is simply weak physically and mentally.

He's probably the worst dolphins kicker I can remember. I have no faith in the guy at all

Stoyonovich, mare, feely, carpenter. I'm sure I'm missing some in between but those four were way better in my mind

Interesting.

Anyways, I'm not going to knock him for this. I don't expect him to keep them locked up in padded cells. It's kickball. He wasn't taking them BASE jumping.

Exactly. This gets filed in the "**** happens" file. Kickball is one step away from shuffleboard on the danger scale.

Ray Finkle!!! Cost us a freaking Super Bowl!

Sounds great, Joe, but if you really believed that, you would have resigned directly after bullygate. Other than that, no, I'm not going to blame him for our ****ty kicker injuring himself playing hopscotch or whatever.

This. I think he should have amended his statement to NOW everything that happens to the players the minute they walk in the door is on him. Obviously it wasn't that way before. But I digress...

I kicker hurt his leg playing team organized kickball. You can't make this stuff up. I mean seriously, you can't wrap them up in bubble wrap but you would think a team could make it through a friendly kickball game without an injury. You have to think Sturgis was trying to show off when he was kicking and he hurt him self trying to bomb one over the outfield's heads.

Many would be surprised but Caleb Sturgis was a top schoolboy soccer player before he became a specialist kicker. (BTW - his brother Nathan is a professional soccer player - midfielder for the Chivas team). While Joe can take the blame, Caleb is a professional sportsman, who knows his body. It is his fault. My hunch is that Caleb was eager to participate in the kickball and display his soccer skills but overextended. Injuries happen.

The kicker of all people injured himself playing kickball! If it was one of the big 300+ lineman I think it would be easier to comprehend. This has to be at the top of the ranks of lame injuries in sports. The only other injury I can think of that compares is when Thomas Jones of the Cardinals broke his hand answering the phone.
