"We're not just going to hand the ball to him," said Philbin, indicating that Bush will see time at receiver. Bush's career-high 216 carries last season came at the expense of his pass-catching role, as his 2.9 receptions per game were by far the fewest of his career. Increased use in the passing game would likely only turn the tables, however, as it would mean fewer carries, particularly if Daniel Thomas bounces back from a rough rookie year. http://nbcsports.msnbc.com/id/46946126/ns/sports-player_news/

He is one of the most dangerous players in the open field. I like this...

I expected this. I always thought Bush was a great receiver, even in the slot. I am surprised we didnt use him more in tha passing game last year.

took daboll like 6 weeks to figure out how to get bush the ball in space etc...too busy batter ramming him into the los in short yardage and goalline...no brainer to use him more in the passing game

I can see Bush taking a role that produces 7-800 receiving yards and rushing for 5-600 with DT taking more of a number 1 RB role. That is if he stays healthy.

The other player I see in the mix more so than we think is Slaton. Very productive in the past in Zone schemes, so we could end up having a 3 headed monster in the backfield. But only if we get the right side of the line sorted.

It was absolutely idiotic the way we used him in the beginning. There shouldn't have even been any "figuring out" for Daboll to even have to do. 100% no brainer - excited to see how Reggie does in his 2nd year.

when we kept running bush up the middle in goalline against new england in the opener i was like this oc daboll is a clown...but he showed thru the year that while he wasn't special by any means he had a lot more modern grasp on things than dan henning did...i'm not sure mike sherman is exactly an innovator but hopefully a lot of the stuff we saw from green bay with philbin rubs off on these guys...

Reggie Bush will lead the team in total yards.

My surprise player? Charles Clay. He will be the seambusting threat.

I suspect we'll over rotate, and use Bush far too seldom in power running formations. That's the tendency in a situation like this, particularly with a coach from Green Bay and such recent success on a pass oriented team. He won't fully grasp that it wasn't the formations and schemes and brainpower as much as simply a dominant quarterback like Aaron Rodgers, allowing everything to unfold better than any birthright.

Likewise, a tipoff will be when we use Matt Moore too often in empty formations, and they will be avalanched. Great quarterbacks can get away with empty sets but it's exponentially less effective as you drop in class.

Philbin is a sharp guy and no doubt will adjust but it's a considerable favorite he'll be shell shocked early when all the cute designs don't develop as anticipated, with a moderate quarterback and surrounding personnel.

Bush was thrilled when Daboll had so much patience with him last year, continuing to use power sets out of basic I formation even when it stalled early in the year and even later in the season in his first handful of touches. The Buffalo game was ugly before he busted up the middle several times. Sean Payton was the type to give up on Reggie when games started that way, and I hope Philbin doesn't follow suit. If so, Reggie might opt elsewhere in 2013. We shouldn't discount how much he believes in his rightful place as a full time player.

I've called for Reggie to be used in lethal downfield situations. It needs to be shifts and motion, like lining him up at tailback then darted into the slot, creating confusion and matchup difficulties. If we simply send him out sporadically at wide receiver I think he'll be neutralized and essentially wasted as a decoy, the Sean Payton specialty.

No way Bush has the year that he had last year on the ground. I expect somewhere around 700 yards on the ground with PLENTY more receiving yards. Dude is a beast and we didn't even fully utilize him last year. I'm so excited to see what Philbin/Sherman/Coyle have in store for us.

Running up the middle or really running at all is more on the OL then the running back. On a smaller RB like Bush it is even more on the OL to make holes.

I felt like that season was at times about forcing the ball to B Marshall and giving R Bush carries between the tackles because he wanted to prove he could be the "feature" back.

Also, like some people said last season, it is up to R Bush to make his own space, if a coach could draw it up, anyone could do it.

Well duh, who else are we going to throw to? We have three number 3 receivers, starting!

Reggie is lethal in the passing game. That's how the Saints used him.... those short 5 yard check downs or designed play action passes give Reggie the room to make people miss tackles and create a big play. That's how you use his talent.

I know Reggie wanted to "prove" he can be a traditional running back this past year.. he got his 1,000 yard season and hopefully it's out of his system now. He can go back to doing what he does best.

Sparano and company truly were clueless.
