Phillies swap Thome for Rowand

Konerko's a free agent, and I think Thomas is too. They'll work hard to resign Konerko, and if they can't, they've got their first baseman. If they can resign Konerko, Thomas gets a pat on the back and a "so long, old buddy".

i thought thomas had a mutal option that was picked up by both?

maybe not, but thats what i thought.

also, forgot about konerko being a FA, but they need him, he was big them.

I think its a good trade for both teams. I don't think Thome is done but Phillies had Howard who is a stud and proved he could carry a team when they need him. And now they have a CFer finally.

ChiSox now have a 1st basemen if Paulie K doesn't return and if he does they have a DH.

Great move for the fightin's, they had to pay half of Thome's contract but they do actually save 4 million for this year. Hopefully they put that towards an offer for Wagner who i really think doesn't want to go to NY and bring him back to be the excellent closer that he is. They also get Rowand who is a solid defensive CF (which has been there weakness) and now they can start Ryan Howard at 1B and let him show his potential without having to worry about Thome and when/where to use him.

I wouldn't have done this if I was Chicago. Thome's up there in years and has a serious back problem. And they're on the hook for a pretty fair piece of his contract. Plus, I think Rowand's a hell of a player and will only get better.

Consider what the Mets gave up for Delgado versus this. I think most people would agree that Delgado's a much better bet than Thome for 2006. The Mets are paying a little more salary and gave up quite a bit less talent.

I wanted Lastings Milledge, but I like what we got back for Delgado, especially if we HAD to trade him and Minaya was the only nut willing to take on virtually the whole contract. Petit is the best pitching prospect in the organization, never bad to acquire those. We've seen that Jacobs can really hit, I'm just hoping he can sustain it over a season. And from what I've read on this Grant Psomas, I'm very high on him. He's got patience, power, speed, average, and a great glove. Matter of fact, I haven't read one knock on him yet...and I hope it stays that way.

You think? To me there is No question that if Thome is healthy he can be one of the better sluggers in the game, he had ONE injury plagued year in Philadelphia which was last year. Meanwhille the other 2 years he belted over 40 HR's and played at an all-star level. As a DH in an easy to hit in park in Chicago, he could revitalize his career with some serious power numbers. He's an AL kind of guy, he's from Illinois, and i wouldn't be suprised if we saw Thome hit 42-43 HR's next year if he can stay healthy.

To me, those reasons pale in comparison to "he's 35 years old with a bad back and was declining even before his injury". From 2002-2004, his home run totals declined every year. However, you hit the nail on the head: *IF* he's healthy, he's one of the better sluggers in the game. Would you rather have the sure production from Delgado, or gamble on the roughly 50-50 chance that Thome will be healthy?

Thome is not done...I will say that time and time again. He will step it up back to his old form, and If not, he will be close. He can still hit...

Because Frank Thomas has been constantly hurt since what, 2001, with the exception of one year?
