Here's a go read on Wheeler this year, and a VG explanation of cap options.
Here's a simplified version for next year.
We owe the cap $4.2M on his signing bonus, which he has received. If he is cut fore June, we take the hit and save $200K but, we can cut him after June 1 and save $3M but, take the $2.8M balance in 2016. No matter what, we will take that hit, just a matter of when.
Wheeler's salaries, with a $100K workout bonus, are $3M in 2015, and $5M each the next 2 years. That is what we save depending on when he is cut.
So, for example, we can cut him next year, take he full hit, save only $200K, and sign another player to a contract with a cheap first year and $5M the next two years to use Wheeler's saved salaries.
Or, we could cut him in June, have $3M on the cap, and defer the other $2.8M cap hit to 2016.
Depends o new player options and the need for cap space.
