PHillip Wheeler

Wheeler can't get off of blocks and has poor instincts.

I'll tell you what I think happened...it was the same as Gerbil Wilson...when we played the Raiders the year before, both made big plays against us. They got noticed. For Wilson it was a turnover, and for Wheeler, he blindsided Tannehill on a blitz. You had a couple of guys that showed up against us, but rarely at other times....and our scouts didn't do their homework, or our coaches over-valued the players based on how they did against us.

Strange thread for this game. Wheeler played 68 snaps, and had one missed tackle. He led the team (tied with Jones) with 6 stops (when the individual tackle stops the O from doing anything).

In coverage, he was thrown at 5 times, giving up 2 completions. One was for 12 yards, the other was for minus 5.

Pick on him for the year so far, if ya like. However, it should not be for this game.

Its not how many you miss it when you miss. Thats what kill the Dolphins we dont make plays on 3rd downs (especially 3rd and long).

I think his miss was on Jackson on a critical 3rd down.

What Wheeler brings to the table is pursuit, willingness and ability to produce turnovers, blitz ability, and the ability to defend the read option.

If you are looking for a pure coverage guy, he is not your guy. If you are looking for an old school strong at the point of attach guy, he is not your guy.

But, his motor doesn't stop, he gives you potential in the pass rush, eventually he will produce fumbles, and when EJ Manuel and Geno (ButtFumble 2.0) Smith use the read option ... We have solutions. Wheeler is one. Ireland drafted Jelani Jenkins to be another, and the cornerstone of our future defense against mobile QB's, Dion Jordan, is another.

With the recent influx of mobile QB's fueled by the cheap rookie contracts for 5 years for first rounders (now teams can draft disposable QB's without the devastating financial effects), defenses need to fundamentally change. Speed and lateral agility are even more at an premium at OLB/DE than they were before.

Crazy that ppl are turning on our players after six games. If one play does not make or break you then why bring up the missed tackle against the bills. Wheeler is not an inside backer he does not play well in space. That's a fact but he is backer who attacks the Los. Not make tackles eight yards down it. I liked Burnett a lot and he played great for us last year. He outplayed dansby. But you have to factor that Burnett was playing behind oddrick he is a big body dude. Wheeler is playing behind Vernon. Big difference in siZe. As far as wheelers fit? He is best suit where he is. You don't want him covering all game and you don't want him down lined up at the Los he is too small to play in a 34. Our d was put in some bad spots on Sunday due to turnovers.

So, ya wanna pick on him for one bad play, and forget about the six stops, and being VG in coverage?

Sorry, I can't do that. Guess that's why I like PFF for watching all the plays.

he's awful...terrible contract...no instincts...zero none nada...sucks that we got that at weakside backer for the next 2 years probably...hasn't filled a easy key read off tackle run play for the tackle at the los since he got here...lost in zone coverage...
How come he had such a good season in Oakland last year? Why is it that these players have a good season, negotiate a big rise by signing with Miami and suddenly then their weaknesses are exposed. It happens time and time again. Are we making it more complex than it needs to be?
Even Karlos Dansby is having a better season back in Arizona.

His ****ing hair moves too much.
Get him turned once and that ****ing mop starts flying.
JP should make him cut that ****

Dansby had a different role with us than he did in Arizona. I am pretty sure in his first stint with the Cardinals he played Will.

Don't worry, I'm pretty sure within the next 10 years they won't even televise the games. They'll just be a statistical summary of what happened at the end and we can visualize how the game went down and argue about it on Finheaven.

Like if Tannehill had 3 fumbles in one game and Clabo gave up 3 sacks, we could just put 2 and 2 together and assume all 3 fumbles occurred during the 3 sacks given up by Clabo.

Man I can't wait

you think the LB/SS production is hurting us more than a record number of 26 sacks in 6 games hurts us?

Yup. Our O-line has held up for enough chunks of games to allow us get down the field and be #1 in redzone efficiency. I'm not saying it's perfect, or even good, but the line has been serviceable for periods of every game.

That strip sack at the end of the Bills game would have been a garbage-time non-factor if we had managed to contain Buffalo, their 4th string QB and their limping RBs. Instead our defense gave up yards in swathes to underneath throws, outside runs, screens and checkdowns. Bills turned 3-yarders into 13 yarders all game. We made it soooo easy for them to get downfield it was pathetic. The CBs were decent if not stellar, Wilson was his usual liability self, but the real gains came at the expense of our LBs and Jones. Instincts and tackling form are virtually non-existant.

his numbers looked good in oakland but that team sucked...and he gets plenty of tackles and numbers cause teams go after him so much...i saw dansby he's slower now and falling off fast...it won't be long with him...got a nasty looking bicep too...says a lot though that he played thru that last year for us a lot of guys would have just hung em up for the season

why??? cause pff says so....no thanks

Wheeler is a liability on the defense and the Dolphins would be wise to bring in someone to compete with him or replace him. He is getting by on athleticism (like Dion Jordan) the difference is, Jordan has a knack for big plays, Wheeler has a knack for being out of position...

sucks when your de jordan is more instinctual than your weak side backer...but he is...ha ha

Meh ... in all honestly, I've started to think our DC isn't all he's cracked up to be. But that's a whole 'nother thread I guess.
