Ok, welcome back. Let's take a look at the first couple of drives. My initial impressions were pretty positive. I thought the line looked pretty good and I though Carey stood out a couple times with some good blocks. But, lets look at the tape (Powered by Tivo). I

1st and 10: Short Pass to the Flat (morris) for 6.

Notes: Started 2 TEs. Jax ran a stunt with the DTs going outside and the DEs going inside.

McMike: Releases down field.
Carey: Handles stunt well picks up outside rusher.
James: Gets DE with Seth.
Seth: Stays in zone helps James.
HAdnot: Ok, gets help from McDougal.
McDougal: Helps HAdnot.
Lee: Handles DT one on one. Pretty good read.

What Happened: BAsically a well blocked quick hitter. A little strange that Jax would run a stunt like this on 1st down, but the line handled it well.

2nd and 4: Short run for Minor: Called back on Hold.

McMike: Gets a solid block on LB.
Carey: He's a big man, good when he gets his hands on ya. Handles 98 seals back side.
James: Stalemates his guy. Ok, but I'd like to see some movement.
Seth: Gets beat really by poor positioning. Sigh.
HAdnot: Pulls to deal the outside. Not a great block, guy slides off and gets in on the tackle.
McDougal: Powers the LB out of the hole. Very nice.

What happened: Safety came up and made the tackle. relatively well blocked though. Except for Seth, and Hadnot should have finished his block better.

2nd and 14: Gus a little late on a pass outside to Chambers. Good catch, but out of bounds. The play is a naked role out. The blocking is a fake run block.

Notes: Finally a 2 back set?

McMike: Releases up the field. Gets of the line well.
Carey: Picks up the DE, but not much to do.
James: Runs behind carey and pats him in the back.
Seth: Gets a sort of block on the DT. Not much to do.
HAdnot: NOthing to do. .
McDougal: Let's the end run past him, guess that;s the design though.

What happened: Guys got in on Gus pretty quick, not much to say about the line here as they were really faking a run to the left while Gus went right.

3 and 14: Sack for a loss.

Notes: Shotgun set with two set backs (McMike and Morris).

Carey: Rides his guy out but, the DE reads Gus stepping up and gets underneath Carey to get in on the sack. Carey is powerful but not quick in open space.
James: Starts with Seth on a double team and then handles 98 by himself. Best block on the play.
Seth: Leaves the double team to help Hadnot, but basically knocks HAdnot's guy past hadnot into Gus. Sigh.
 HAdnot: IN fairness, Rex was losing the block before Seth "helped" Not a good job.
McDougal: Got beat bad on the outside which forced Gus up in the pocket where HAdnot's man got the sack.

What happened: McDougal killed this play. He got whipped.

Drive 2

1st and 10: Nice Gain for Morris up the Middle.

McMike: Ok block on the end.
Lee: Absolutely pancakes his guy. Wow. Nice block.
Carey: Falls down.
James: Stalemates. pushes his guy out of the hole. Ok.
:shakeno: Seth: Starts helping James, Runs around like a chicken with its head cut off and misses the LB who makes the tackle.
HAdnot: Power blocks 98 . Nice Job until McDOugal knocks him over?????
McDougal: KNocks over Hadnot trying to get to a LB who he fails to block anyway.

What happened: Some strong blocking here, but could have been a big gain with a bit better play by McDougal and Seth.

2nd and 6. Slant to Chambers.

Notes: Two TE set again.

McMike: Releases to the flat.
Carey: Handles DE ok.
James: Going backward, but pay gets off quick enough.
Seth: I think he is still looking for someone to block.
HAdnot: OK, holds place a little better.
McDougal: Absolutely buries his guy this time. I guess he can block when he wants.

What happened: Actually, a very nice design. Lee runs shallow under the slant forcing the LB up and openning up Chambers for the 1st down. Well blocked and well designed.

1st and 10: Morris outside run for nothing.

NOtes: 2 TE set again.

Lee: Seals 98. Say what you want about Lee's pass catching. The guy can flat out block.
:) Carey: Actually knocks 97 off the screen. He's a beast. Too bad it was behind the play, but Booyah.
James: Roll block? I guess, or he fell down.
:) Seth: No this is not a joke, Seth makes a good block and rides his man to the ground. Hard to believe, I know.
Hadnot: Drives his man back after a brief stalemat. He's rough, but I like him.
McDougal: Comes out to seal the end, but ends up trying to help McMike on the DE.
McMike: Gets overwhelmed by the DE.

What happened: Actually, a lot to like from the line here. I believe Morris should have cut the run up the field instead of trying to get outside. Ricky makes this a big gainer I bet.

2nd and 9: Incomplete to Chambers on the sideline

McMike: Stays in to help Carey together easily handle a stunt.
Carey: Seems increasingly comfortable out there.
James: Gets DE and handles him solo. Nice job.
Seth: Stands behind Hadnot and pushes him in the back. To help I guess.
HAdnot: Gets DE. Hahahahahahahah
McDougal: He and Lee handle the DT on the stunt easily.

What happened: Two man route. Chambers is open. Good play well executed, Gus misses. Though Chambers had his hands on it. Line had this blocked easily.

3rd and 9: INcomplete over McMikes head.

Note: Gus had time again. Poor throw. SHotgun set with 3 WR a TE (McMike) and RB (Morris). DTs twist to confuse the OL, doesn't work.

McMike: Releases out of the backfield.
Carey: Solid block, gets help form MOrris who chips on his way to the flat.
James Seth and Hadnot: Pass off the DTs, handle the stunt. Very good job.
McDougal: Absolutely buries his guy again. He's got talent, wish he showed it every play.

What HAppened: Gus threw a bad pass. Good line blocking though.

Summary:

Carey: Beast. Has some trouble in space on the pass block, but he's a good one.
James: Hope his lack of power is just about the sickness. SOund though.
Seth: Well, he is a little better than last year.
Hadnot: Already a good run blocker. PAss blocking needs work.
McDOugal: You can see the talent, but seems a little lazy out there.
Lee: Strong blocker from the TE position.

Morris is not a great runner. We would have had better success on a couple plays with Ricky in there.

great analysis... your time is appreciated, great post.

good thorough assessment, im liking these reports... yeah lee is a beast and has all the talent youd want in a TE, just cant get his head and his hands together... its a shame...

great read. that a good analysis....i remember watching the incomplete pass over mcmikes head and thinking damn that is alot of time to throw...

He reminds me of the movie the Replacements. Franklin the guy is really fast and is always open, but never catchs the ball. Maybe we can get him some of that tar stuff to put on his gloves. :D
