Ok - Let's take a look at the tape, powered by TIVO.

1st and 5: Successful Out Pattern.

Carey - Beat to the outside, recovers and pushes his man past Feeley.
James - Falls on his butt. Evans picks up his guy.
Hadnot and St. Clair - SUccessful double team of the tackle.
McDougal: Half hearted shielding of his man. Lucky play happened fast.

1st and 10: SHort Gain on off tackle run.

McMike: Successfully seals end. Good Job.
Carey: Dominates his guy, though he does drive him into the running lane.
James: Gets a pretty good push, than falls on his face.
Hadnot: Also gets good push after brief stalemate. Strong guy.
St. Clair: Gets beat, but his guy runs by the play.
McDougal: Handles Wale. Nice job.

So what happened? The safety was standing at the line. Actually, Saban was right about the 8 man front.

2 and 7: Run, No gain.

McMike: Again takes his guy out of the play. He's a good blocker for a little guy.

Carey: Gets good push again, but doen't stay locked with his man.
James: One on One handles a huge DT. Very Good.
Hadnot: Absolutely misses his guy who gets in fast.
St. Clair: Pulls, but can't stop the blitzing LB in the hole.
McDOugal. Looks like he is blocking down and leaving the end alone, which might be by design. No one to block, tries to recover and hit Wale, but too late, not that it ends up mattering as the play already ended on the other side of the line.

What happended? 8 man front again, Safety is in like white on rice LB blitz or rather dog to be accurate.

3rd and Long: Thompsons drop !!!

Carey: Not bad. Rides his guy past the QB. WOuld like to see him lock up, but ok.
James: Again loses his feet, but gets the job done blocking 91.
HAdnot: No One to block so he helps James who had fallen again.
St. Clair: Got beat, his guy was the man that put a huge lick on Feeley. Just got beat by a swim move.
McDougal: Gets the block with the help of a chip by the RB, looks like it might be a bit of a hold, but its good if not called.

So that's the first drive.

Observations: Better than I thought. 8 man fronts and run blitzes killed us, but we were not prepared for this it seems. As for the line.

Carey is big and strong, but not great in space. Might be better suited for Guard, but should be a passable LT with help on speed rushers.

James: Has talent. I'd give him a break because of illness. Did have one really good play.

Hadnot: The one thing you do notice about him is that he never goes backward. Strong guy. Missed a block, but you have to like him.

St.Clair: Not great. Not horrible either. But, Middleton will be there soon I bet.

McDougal: Nothing great, and some weak efforts. But, it is early.

If you want me to do another drive let me know, if not I'll call it a week.

Thanks for the info good information. I would like to see a breakdown of the play where Feely gets "hurt" (shoe would go back on), Looked like a mess everyone collapsed to the right side of the line then Urlacher almost took AJ's head off! if you have time that would be sweetAlso any info on the rb blocking would be great Gordon looked like he had no idea what he was doing a few times.

yeah liked this... i was gonna go back and see the line those first series' see how the run blocking was and if it really was just that they had the box stacked... if you could continue onto the second drive thatd be excellent...

Great Stuff. Thanks!

If you care to do some other drives, it would be great, maybe do a scoring drive to see what works and if the OL play improves. Thanks again.

Great post PhinKev. Your post backs up my analysis of what I was saying about the o-line as well. Go and check out my thread "A Few More Observations for Arsenal and all dolfans". Tell me what you think.

That play was a mess. I don't really think it was a blitz by design. I believe Urlacher saw the open space and instead of allowing us to wait for our play to develop, he shot in there to try and get the sack or maybe a safety. That was a play where all h#!! broke loose.

Great post, good detail. Sounds like the line might be better than the stats suggested

Great Post!

This really says it all! We can talk all day about the QB's but the rubber meets the road at the o-line. Houck gets the big bucks to fix this mess, and our success this year rides on how well he gets it done. I think we will work on picking up the blitz this week, but the bad news is McKinney is starting again. Ugh!

From what I saw I thought that a lot of the breakdowns in pass protection were a result of missed assignments by the RBs. I know on one particular play, I believe it was Evans and possibly Gordon standing near each other with no one to block while Feeley got some major pressure. Would you say that was the case also?

When is it going to click that blitz pick ups aren't always the responsibility of the offensive linemen? The quarterback and the running back have just as much responsibility when it comes to identifying where the blitz is coming from and getting into position to make the pick up.

The Bears ran a lot of what are called "green dog" plays where they MLB would delay blitz through the guard/tackle gap. Tell me, whose responsibility is it to pick up that blitz when the guard and the tackle in that gap are already engaged on blocks? Do you expect the center to loop around the guard and make that block, or do you expect the quarterback to pick this up and get rid of the football quickly?

The latter is the breakdown of the play AJ got hurt on. Vernon got beat on the outside but recovered. AJ did a good job of stepping up, but the problem starts when he saw the green dog. Instead of getting rid of the football, he froze. Blame that on the OL all you want, but that was on Feeley.

Not on the runningback for not reading the coverage and picking up the blitz?
