First comes the Peyton party, then the pity party.
The Miami Dolphins don't want it to seem that way after being rejected by free agent extraordinaire Peyton Manning, but here's his basic explanation of why they can't be together.
Hey, listen, it's not you. It's me. But don't worry. You'll find someone else, someone who's just right for you.
That someone else had better be Matt Flynn, who showed up at Dolphins camp in Davie early Saturday bleary-eyed and anxious from his test drive and pressure sales job with the Seattle Seahawks.
New Dolphins coach Joe Philbin knows Flynn well from their days together in Green Bay. Maybe this won't be so bad after all if the deal gets done. Maybe with some exciting new offensive ideas and a couple of smart draft picks, this franchise will figure out how to win again.
But wait, something's not right here.
Jumping Jehosaphat, we just described the run-up to that catastrophic 2007 Dolphins season, otherwise known as Camageddon.
That time around Cam Cameron was the rookie NFL head coach. Like Philbin, he previously gained accolades as the creative coordinator of a dynamite offensive unit, only at San Diego instead of Green Bay.
The Dolphins were coming off a 6-10 season, just like now.
Trent Green, who once worked with Cameron in Washington, was the trusted veteran imported to run the new Miami offense, in the same way that Philbin is trusting Flynn now.
What's more, the Dolphins traded away their top receiver, Wes Welker, for a couple of draft picks in March of 2007. Not exactly the same as the brushoff just given to Brandon Marshall, but too close for comfort.
