So in Nick's press conference today, he mentioned that the team will carry 9 D-linemen. 7 down linemen and 2 pass-rush hybrids, from the sound of it.

So, out of the Linemen on the roster right now, who do you see making it/getting cut?

(positions as listed on MiamiDolphins.com Roster)

DTs
Steve Fifita
Fred Evans
Howard Green
Manuel Wright [currently on Roster Exemption/Not with Squad]
Josh Shaw
Jeff Zgonina
Kevin Vickerson
Keith Traylor
Dan Wilkinson [joined team today]

DE
Ben Ishola
Vonnie Holiday [also shifts to DT at times, but listed as DE on roster]
Kevin Carter
David Bowens
Matt Roth
Jason Taylor

So, which 9 stay? And will any make it to the practice squad?

I dont know but zgonina may be the odd man out if Vickerson can prove himself becuase he looked good the other night plus looks bigger.

JT
Carter
Holliday
Roth
Traylor
Wilkinson (if he is truly ready and in shape)
Evans
Vicerson
Bowens and I have to wonder if one of the LB's is a hybrid or two of them but I think Bowens is considered a hybrid as well.

Clearly, Saban will keep:

End: Taylor, Roth, Bowens, & Carter
Tackle: Traylor, Holliday, Zgonina & Wilkinson

I think it comes down to Evans vs. Vickerson. Only other possibility is if he cuts Zgonina and keeps both of the above mentioned young pups...

Sounds about right

Barring injuries [knock on wood], that sounds about right.

With all the experience on this line, I think this will be the year Zgonina is let go . . he has been a trooper and consistenly defies the odds, but I think he is the odd man out . . I would say Vickerson also, but Manny doesn't seem to want to tighten up so Vickerson stays IMO.

Zgonina is not a good fit for the 3-4. With Wilkinson on board, Zgonina gets traded at the end of camp for a late-round pick. Evans is a keeper, and Vickerson beats out Shaw for the last spot.

Hate to agree

I really hate to agree, because Jeff always overachieves and is the eptiome of the hard-working, determined sort of player Saban's philosophy calls for. I think he's a great role model.

That said, we have a line FULL of older mentors so we don't need him, though I also admire his versatility (when a small guy can play DT, and manage to put in a decent performance at end if called upon, it's hard to let him go). What we need are some pupils for these mentors to start teaching. Let's see how the rest of t.c. and preseason goes for Evans & Vickerson. Right now they may both deserve spots, with Jeff being traded, as you suggested.

I dont think Saban wants to cut his draft picks and youth to keep more old guys, that is the only reason why I say what I say. Vickerson and Evans have to continue to do well. Also may try to sneak Evans on the PS by doing a 3 day switcharoo with a vet who we cut but bring right back.

Switcheroo?

So how does that work? Wouldn't the young player still have to clear waivers?

I think 8 spots are guranteed:

Jason Taylor
Kevin Carter
Vonnie Holliday
Keith Traylor
Dan Wilkinson
Matt Roth
Fred Evans
David Bowens

And that Jeff Zgonina and Kevin Vickerson will fight for the last spot, depending on whether we decide to carry 9. It depends on who steps up at other postions. If we decide to carry 6 Wr's because of the success of Vick and Gibson, than that spot maybe taken away from the D-line.

dont forget that zgonina is also a long snapper, so i say keep him. hes versatile.

but not "the long snapper".

You cut a veteran and tell them you are bringing them back in 3 days so you keep the rookie and sneak him on the PS after the 3 day period where teams can take your practice squad guy. Teams do it all the time.

Big Daddy is a great acquisition. He and Traylor will be all that more effective as they can go full speed and not play as many downs. And, there will be occasions when both of them are in there - that's about 700 lbs. of beef in the middle. Pretty impressive.

Here's what I see:

Starters / Reserves

DE - J. Taylor / D. Bowens
DT - V. Holliday / Zgonina / Evans
NT/DT - Traylor / Wilkinson
DE - K. Carter / M. Roth

Although there is upside with Vickerson, I don't think Saban will keep him there unless he shows it in the pre-season. He has to be a guy who really beats out Zgonina (whose work ethic, imo, puts him in there with the rest - Saban wants guys who "do it the right way" and Zgonina gets it).
