All-Star catcher Mike Piazza agreed Sunday to a $2 million, one-year contract with the San Diego Padres giving the defending NL West champions a marquee player they think can still contribute. Piazza, 37, had been interested in signing a free-agent deal with an AL team to become a designated hitter. Instead, he'll stay in the NL and return to the West Coast for the first time since The Los Angeles Dodgers traded him to Florida in 1998.

he doesn't need to retire. Just go to the American League!!!!!!!!

He's going to cripple himself for no reason. There is a reason MLB has the strongest and best union in the entire world. They get things like a DH passed through to save jobs for old bums like Piazza to keep playing well past their time! And this idiot doesn't take advantage of it.

I also don't understand why he's not DHing somewhere. Seems silly, but whatever. I know that there weren't a lot of AL teams beating down his door.

I can't believe he didn't sign with an AL team. He would be a good DH and get to play a lot more.

He must really be missing the LA sun, because that is the only reason besides him getting to catch and ruin his knees more. I like the option for next year at 7 million, that is priceless.. (there is a 750k buyout, why don't they just tack that to this years total.)

I agree but that's what happens when ego and pride meet.

This could pan out like the Ivan Rodriguez move to the Marlins a few years ago...

Pudge was 31-32, I forget which. Piazza is 37. Pudge was always great in all facets of the game: offense, defense, and leadership. Piazza is the best offensive catcher of all time, up for very little debate, but his defense leaves plenty to be desired, and I don't think he's nearly the leader Pudge was. Most of all, Pudge came back from being hurt. His skills never downgraded. Piazza's been hurt, too, but I think he's just in decline. Doesn't mean it's a bad pickup, but it won't be Pudge.

I am not saying it will be a Pudge, I am saying it could be. All the things you said against Piazza, are the same ones people where saying about Pudge at that time. Just sayin'...:)

Not a bad idea, but the 5-year age differential is problematic. :goof:

Horrible move by Piazza and the Padres. How Piazza didnt end up w/ an AL team is beyond me, but if you are going to the NL atleast go to a park you can hit homers in. They signed a guy who is a shell of a catcher who wont be able to hit for power in that park. I guess it didnt cost them much atleast. I kind of thought the Angels might take a look at him, DH/back up catcher is where he belongs.
