The Lou Piniella could become the new Chicago Cubs manager before the start of the World Series, ESPN reported Saturday.
The report comes on the heels of one from the Chicago Sun-Times, which said the former Devil Rays, Mariners, Reds and Yankees manager would begin negotiations with the Cubs on Monday.
The Cubs recently decided against renewing the contract of manager Dusty Baker after the team's 66-96 season.
On Friday, Piniella took himself out of running for the Giants job strictly because of geography.
Piniella, who is broadcasting the American League championship series for Fox, lives in Tampa, Fla., and was reminded this week on a long cross-country flight of one of the main reasons why he left the Seattle Mariners in the first place.
