The Steelers are still using most of Mike Mularkey's offense, and what we're seeing from them is a "portable" team that can win on the road in the playoffs because of the emphasis it pays to the running game and sustained blocking for downfield passing.

We're going to have a similar offense, so when (not if) we make the playoffs, we'll likely have a similar ability to win on the road.

This could actually pay dividends next year if we make the playoffs with a record in the 10-6/12-4 range and have one or more playoff road games.

Sadly, we don't have the far more important component... Big Ben.

And why do you think they are still using most of Mularky's system? I don't think that's true at all.

There was a report awhile back (when MM left for Buff) that Cowher intended to keep MM's system in place. It went on to say that Cowher had told MM's replacement that he wanted to keep MM's playbook. I'm sure there's been modifications, but the core Pitt system certainly seems very similar now to the system they had when MM was there.

I always say they run a lot of the same formations. Mularkey runs more motions, but when the ball is snapped, the formations look very similar.

Its about playcalling though. Mularkey has a tendency to try and deceive defenses instead of just let the players make a play.

I also was gonna say what good is having Mularky's system when we have Gus at QB and not Ben Roethlisberger....I think it will be good for Ricky and Ronny but we have to get better and bigger on the 0-line. I wonder if this will put an end to us going after TO?

I'd be upset if he didn't. You go through several years of Wanny ball and knowing EXACTLY what he's going to run in every instance it ate phin fans alive.

That was the great thing about Linehan/Saban. It was more exciting and while yes with Ronnie/Ricky we did want to see it run more it somehow worked a lot with Gus at QB. When it became clear that in one of the formations that Linehan was passing all of the time out of it they changed it up.

The big difference here compared to Buffalo though is this team is actually committed to fixing up the O-Line and I believe they will handle a young QB much better. Mularkey didn't have a chance with either Bledsoe or Losman with that sieve of an OL.

I will say this, our OL was pretty bad, actully it wasnt pretty at all, it was ugly bad.

I'll wait and see how he does.

I have my own problems now to worry about. Dick friggin Jauron!! Old and Older were supposed to bring respect back to this organization and they go and hire that Dick.

I think that report was just false.

Gilbride came in and not only brought in a new system... it was so thourghouly a new system and so complicated that the players hated it and absorbed it very slowly.

i don't think they're running anything of Mularky's except in the broadest possible sense.

I disagree. You also knew EXACTLY what Linehan was going to do. And it has often been the same with Mularky.

They try to be unpredictable by being UNCONVENTIONAL... and they're not the same thing. Because when you try so hard to be unconventional you BECOME very predictable.

I don't know if anybody remembers a game, 2003 maybe, Pittsburgh in Buffalo, I think, two freaking feet of snow on the ground... and Mularky's game plan was to throw the ball... FORTY TIMES.

I hope Mularky has learned some since then... even in Buffalo isn't great proof that he has.

I do remember that actually. I remember kordell stewert couldnt play qb because he couldnt learn the new playbook(after mularkey left). I'm not positive but i think your right and there system is pretty different. Either way if they kept the system or not is irrelevant in my mind because he left and the personell has changed so much that even if he WAS there he would run it differently than when he was actually there.

That's right, I forgot about that. And they had Batch and Maddox.

"(His offense) is a lot like what we still do here," said Maddox, who returned from a 10-year absence from the NFL to play quarterback during Mularkey's second season. "As he likes to call it, it's an exotic smash-mouth offense. You're going to run the ball and you're going to be physical. But that's not all you're going to do."

""The Dolphins got a good coach coming," said Steelers wide receiver Antwaan Randle El, who played his rookie season under Mularkey. "He's got some talent down there, too.

It looks like some Steelers players would disagree with you...

True to those who say the difference is Big Ben compared to Gus.. but just keep the names Jay Cutler and Brodie Croyle in mine and hopefully we'll get our Big Ben..
