i know this topic has been discussed within threads, but thought it deserved its own. What goes on with the play calling on 3rd and long that the ball seems like it is always being thrown wayyy behind the first down marker? Is it Gase’s play call or is it Tannehill always checking down? Is the play really designed to throw a 2 yard pass to Albert Wilson and expect him to break 3 tackles and get the first down? It’s like witnissing a miracle when we convert anything over 3rd and 5.

I convert 3rd and long in Madden all the time. Can’t be that hard....

I wouldn't be concerned that it happens occasionally but it seems like everytime which is concerning. Especially noticeable when our third down conversion rate is subpar. One of my top 3 complaints of Gase and Tannahill. Oh how I miss that Killer Instinct of Dan the Man.

Gase’s play calling has to kill Marino. I bet he is infuriated by it.

Its on Gase. The majority of the time calls a short pass on 1st down. Puts us in a 2nd and long which he calls a draw play. This leads to 3rd and long which he gives up and calls another short pass play. Then we punt.

Exactly, never has the defense guessing. 3rd and long continually always a pass unless it's over 15 yards then it's a run d-line d full court press to the QB. We have to do something to get more 3rd and manageable. so it could be a run or pass or whatever to keep the defense thinking.

We made that one 3rd and long with Frank Gore on the Jets. Yes, I agree I wish we would attack downfield and throw for the first down. However, this is all contingent on the O-line doing their job and that's the weak link still.

agreed, we have no answers when it is 3rd and anything over 4 or 5 yards. very disappointing after many years of practice.

where are the 15 yard in routes? where are the mid-deep posts, corner, or dig routes? tannehill has the arm for it, so i dont get it. are our receives not good enough to win those routes?

yes the blocking isnt great, but we are in shotgun, we can't hold up for a split second longer for a slightly longer route to develop?

at least try for a 50/50 ball to gesicki or parker when he is out there. heck, stills can win those as we saw last year many times.

try for an interference penalty, illegal contact, something.

they are dbs for a reason - they stink at catching. dont be afraid to try and win a mano e mano match up.

The frustrating part is Tannehill actually excels at some of these throws. He made a living off of the dig/hitch route with Brian freaking Hartline who didnt even threaten the top of the defense and u mean to tell me that these speedsters cant get separation on these types of routes?

Throwing short on 3rd and long is Gase's style of offense. On 3rd and short, he'll call a pass behind the line of scrimmage and lose yardage. Normal offenses will run up the middle for a yard or two on 3rd and short, but Gase only calls that play on 3rd and 20. Gase's playcalling is illogical. If it's 3rd and 8, you try to throw a 10 yard pass... not 4 yards and HOPE for yards after the catch! Gase needs to go!

its a combination of play calling, OL and QB play. we cant block long enough for downfield routes to develop. the QB doesnt anticipate and can't throw to a spot with some air under it so the ball can come out sooner, and i think our route combos leave something to be desired.

It’s pretty alarming when the commentators constantly point out calling plays short of the sticks on 3rd down. Especially when Miami is at home and the fans start booing. Commentators are like yeah the fans aren’t thrilled with that call.

Without Parker on the field Gase is dialing up run after catch options on third and long, low risk, low reward.

There are few things on this planet that infuriate me more than Gase’s play calling on 3rd down. I wanna punch him in the face every time he calls a 3-yard bubble screen on 3rd and 11.

my 15 yrs old son knows every play on the Dolphins offense...on 3rd and 2, he would predict the play and that exactly what they gonna call.

The worse is the 3rd down defense, why give 10 yrds cushion on 3rd and 5. Like whaooo!!

The answer on why we are bad on both offense and defense on 3rd Downs Is simple. Gase and Burke play conservative all game to "keep the Score close" they rely on turnovers on defense and big plays on offense to be in position of winning a game. Basically they wait for the rival to be the one commiting a mistake. Gase opts for a 5 yard sure gain on third and 8 without risking the interception, until he has no choice if the game Is within reach, if it isnt like the Pats game, he will simply use the game as a practice for the team. He studies the rival into the game and decides when to exploit matchups, problem is players are out of rythm because of many three and outs. Problem of defense Is that players get tired chasing opponents and if the offense cant Score, they will eventually give big leads. First three games we keep it close and had unusual great field position. When we play against teams that play great fundamental football we will lose, because our OL and QB are not difference makers. Teams that are well coached will stop the run on defense and use those big cushions that our D gives. They know they only need to put a two digit lead on us and the game Is over.

A lot of times it's hard to tell if it's Gases fault or Tannys. Theres nothing wrong with having some routes go for less than the sticks. Sometimes the defense leaves the flat open on 3rd and long, sometimes there's a breakdown and you can get any easy first etc.

The problem is when those short routes are clearly covered we still throw them. Maybe Gase has all the short routes being the first reads and with how bad our o line is Tanny never makes it to the longer reads. Maybe Tanny jumps the gun and throws to his first read which is short regardless of the coverage. Whatever the problem is, I don't have a lot of optomisn it will get better since it's been happening for years.
