Players we appear to really miss from last year with other observations.
Randall Hill Last year we brought in Crockett to supplant Hill who was also coming back from a knee injury. It did not work. With Hill in the line up the secondary jelled. According to the “experts” Hill is athletically limited. Still with Hill in the lineup when he was a Dolphin we had a solid pass defense. Currently with Wilson we are getting Crockett type results. The only answer on the current roster might be Culver. Against Atlanta he looked decent when he played.
David Martin Yes I know he is injured but he possessed at least some of the qualities the current coaching staff is seeking in a WR/TE. He is a big target that can catch the ball in traffic and make a play after the catch. More importantly with him in the game opposing teams cannot focus on Fasano who is “not” shown he is good enough to carry the TE position on his own.
Chad Pennington threw 3 catchable balls into the end zone. The other teams we have faced have players that could have made those catches.
Ronnie Brown running the ball toward the end of the 4th quarter looked to have very tired legs and to have lost his spurt perhaps a fresh Patrick Cobbs would have been order for a fresh spurt or time for the pass maybe.
Pat White 1 and done. So far he has been a non factor. He has to start bringing a real threat to the plate. This team is limited on offense and cannot be giving up even a down just to see what the other team is doing.
San Diego- Lets see we have the offensive line playing their hearts out, running backs with tired legs after 61 carries and a short week. Throw in a very limited passing game and a short week with a trip to the west coast. ODDs will not be in the Dolphins favor at all.
Tony Sporano – This was a major emotional loss last night you could see it on the players faces so some major rebuilding to do in a short amount of time. Tony’s clock management skills will be questioned this week by the media. Tony has to ignore that because he has a much bigger job to do like rebuilding the confidence of this team. The secondary has to be losing confidence as well as the offense in general. This team is just not built to score quickly and they know it while the secondary can certainly blow it and the whole team knows it.
Special Teams improvement. Should I say the Lex Hilliard Demon.? Plus Carpenter actually had a couple of kickoffs into the end zone this week. Maybe baby steps to some but overall major improvement. Many might not like what Patrick Cobbs and Bess bring to the table on special teams but they are solid returner’s just not solid spectacular returners. Ginn has the god given talent to be spectacular but is just not solid. So this will probably be as good as we get until next year.
Greg Camillo knee still must not be there yet. He is playing more of a position role and is nowhere close to contributing where he was at this time last year.
Brian Hartline might just take over Greggs job he looked solid not spectacular last evening. Couple of nice catches without the flags.

Throw in Roth.

Roth was really a tremendous force over the middle and in the run. He took out TE's and was a better tackler then even Bell.

You think that Roth would have made a difference last night? The colts had the one running play that I could see him making a difference in last night but I am not sure he could have contributed against Gates. Do you somehow see him nuteralizing Gates more last night than some of the other playes. Roth has more limited quickness. IMO

After going over last year's box stats from every game, our defense held TE's to:

55 Receptions
591 yards

or

10.75 yards/Reception

or

36 yards/game

Now:

12 Receptions
296 yards

or

24.67 yards/Reception

or

145.5 yards/game

You tell me the difference.

For a 3-4 Defense
If a team runs a te, you need to be able to have a strong side olb that is tough enough to be able to play a 9 tech on him.

So you think with Roth in Clark does not make some of those receptions he made last night?

As that is true we have played 2 of the top 4 TE in the leauge and our next matchup is another top 4 TE all that is missing is Witten and we would of had to play them all.

So kind of these two games could be misleading at the moment.

We played Jon Carlson, Vernon Davis, Tony Gonzales, Todd Heap, Antonio Gates, Owen Daniels.

Certainly not as good as the Tight ends we face this year, but certainly no slouches either.

Yep getting Gonzalez and Clark on the schedule to open the season is certainly going to skew numbers. Gonzalez was an animal as usual and he caught passes in good coverage. And yes on a side note we could use a healthy Roth.

David Martin is number 1 on this list. How many times did we target him last season? Haynos or Nalbone is no Martin, I was wondering if we would miss him because he was such a valuable target in the passing game. I really think he opened up Fasano's game as well.

I will tell you another complete and total defensive disaster last night. Nate Jones at Nickel or Dime or whatever it was. Complete and utter waste of a helmet.
