Will we have better success against the 4-3 or 3-4? I know in the 4-3 the defense relies heavily on the DL and the 3-4 relies on the LB. The reason I ask is because supposedly now that Seymour is gone, the Patriots might use the 4-3, would that be an advantage or disadvantage?

Probably depends on the quality of the opponent more than the scheme. For instance, would we have more success running on the Steelers 3-4 or the Vikings 4-3? Probably about the same, but a 3-4 allows for a better scheme at disguising blitzes. But it only works if you have a Lamarr Woodley or James Harrison lining up on the ends. Oh, and a big Hampton in the middle.

i personally like going up against 4-3 teams more. they blitz less and are more predictable.

Now that we have a center that can succeed at all of the following actions, we should not be vulnerable to 4-3 stunts or a large 3-4 NT.

  • Block a power NT one-on-one
  • Reach the backside ILB on a sweep versus a 4-3 alignment
  • Effectively determine the guard to help on passing downs versus a 4-3
  • Identify pass rush stunts and choose the correct assignment
  • Hold his ground versus a bull-rush

Grove is going to make a tremendous difference to the success of our offensive. You will not see him blowing out people, but you will notice less sacks and more consistent drives. Most people will not realize that Grove is stabilizing the line and contributing to success because they want flash, but I will be happy with the success he will bring to the offense.

If any of you had a brain and knew football just a little you would realize that 65 percent of the defensive plays last year from the Pats were in a 4/3.

I really hope you are right. Grove didn't show a whole lot this preseason and at times provided no push for our running game between the tackles. I think he can get it done, I just want to see it now. If he can play the way you described, Ronnie and Ricky could both be close to 1,000 yards rushing each.

Every team Miami played in the pre season plays a 4-3.

Atlanta plays a 4-3.

Miami played in a dome at New Orleans in their last pre season game to prepare for week one.

Atlanta plays in a dome.

Miami will win in the dome on Sunday.

Yeah, 4-3 teams don't necessarily blitz less, just already having four rushers means that they're isn't as much of a need to bring one in out of the backers, and their only more predictable if there scheme sucks (which is true for all systems.)

It's all about disguising. A 3-4 defensive front is a lot more unpredictable to an offense in disguising what they are going to do pre snap.

Just like a Quarters coverage in the secondary is the best system at disguising to a QB what they are going to do.

A 3-4 defensive front, when you have the right personnel, is a more flexible defense. Hence when I say "when you have the right personnel", because that is a very important factor.

You can't just plop 7 big bodies and hope to build a 3-4 defense, because they have to be the right people with the right talent, the right characteristics, and the right attributes at every position..

Pittsburgh and Baltimore had the top 2 ranked defenses in the NFL last season. Both of them run a 3-4 with the right personnel. And they confuse offenses better than anyone......Just ask opposing Quarterbacks.

He performed everything I listed in the preseason. I never used the word "push" for a reason. It is not necessary for Grove to drive his man off the ball to stabilize the offensive line. It is necessary that he performs each of the bullets I listed. I hope he does drive his man off the ball. I expect him to demonstrate that power, and I am not satisfied with his performance.

I do want people to realize that what he has shown already is a drastic improvement over last year. Most people do not see a significant difference from last year, and I am astounded by that is a prevailing opinion.

it depends on personnel. the Patriots appear to be better suited to play a 4-3 now.
