Most of my training was on electronics with vacuum tubes.

Good preparation for dealing with some of the "empty headed" posts that "occasionally" pop up on my screen ( no my last CRT was attached to my original Compaq DeskPro) - LOL

Being just a bit younger, I came along in the "transistor era". My dad and I spent a lot of time making projects from the old popular electronics mag. though we did build a few oatmeal carton crystal sets.

Did they work?
Yes, but not well.

You could pick up an AM station now and then from atmospheric "skip".

Since they had no actual power source, a tiny ear piece was about all you could do, even then, very faint.

It was more a learning experience than any real value.

Crosley radio started out making crystal radios commercially.
