RT finally showed some on Sunday. He stepped up, he moved around, he rolled out. To me that's been his biggest weakness, even worse than his deep ball. Qbs gotta feel where the rush is coming from, usually by the time Ryan feels it it's too late. That changed on Sunday. He'll need that awareness these next 2 weeks, we're about to find out if our boy is ready to take us into January.

He's showed it all year. He hasn't shown it previously because the o-line wasn't capable of creating a pocket.

He's shown glimpses but there's been plenty of times this year he's held the ball way too long and been sacked.

Love these arm chair QBs -

14 TDs - 6 Int - that is pocket presence - it is amazing how a qb confidence goes up when he gets that extra second

I also got to disagree that he hadn't shown pocket presence. It was already discussed in detail another thread. The best post was: "in order to display pocket presence you first need the existence of a pocket".

/end thread

Also: holding on to the ball too long is different from not having pocket presence. Not the same thing at all. But I would agree that he did look great in the pocket on Sunday, especially when he juked that defender in space, can't remember when exactly.

The one where he had two defenders coming at him and James pushed one passed the pocket while Tannehill juked the other, scrambled to the right and completed the pass to Clay? That was nice. I commented in the game thread that it was nice to have an athletic QB after that play.

And contrary to people thinking that Marino helped Tannehill with his pocket presence it's not knowledge you can impart on someone else. It comes from experience, trust in your offensive line and in an offensive line that can form a pocket. You can't tell someone how to feel pressure from your blindside...it comes from experience. Tannehill has had pocket presence...look at his games from Texas A&M and you'll see it. Even in his rookie year when he was sacked only 35 times he had it. Last year the O-line was just garbage (and so was the O-line coach). This years O-line is still a work in progress but a huge upgrade. If they keep Colledge out against Jacksonville Dolphins probably don't give up 3 sacks or all those pressures. As it is Tannehill is on pace to get sacked 34 times this year and he's had 4 games where he's been sacked once or less. No surprise that the issues come when we face really good DTs...which happens again this week against Detroit.

Yeah, I think that's the one. The beauty is that, unlike certain other QBs, he was still looking to pass the ball.

just needed time and more reps...once he learned to climb the pocket the rest of it was gravy...he's still learning how much of a difference his legs can be and when to stand in and when to take off but it's all coming along...having 2 book end tackles is allowing him to learn at his pace...2 years from now there won't be any more pocket presence concerns and he wont need necessarily bookend players on the edge...

the needle is pointing upwards...patience and reps folks...

About half way through the Charger game, Dan Fouts said Ryan Tannehill has excellent pocket awaresness. Just in case you don't think Dan Fouts knows it when he sees it, here are his accomplishments in the NFL:

Career history

San Diego Chargers (1973–1987)

Career highlights and awards

6× Pro Bowl (1979, 1980, 1981, 1982, 1983, 1985)
2× First-team All-Pro (1979, 1982)
2× Second-team All-Pro (1980, 1985)
Pro Bowl Co-MVP (1982)
NFL MVP (PFWA, NEA, 1982)
NFL Offensive Player of the Year (AP, PW, 1982)
2× UPI AFC Player of the Year (1979, 1982)
San Diego Chargers #14 retired
San Diego Chargers Hall of Fame
San Diego Chargers 40th Anniversary Team
San Diego Chargers 50th Anniversary Team
NFL 1980s All-Decade Team
Pro Football Hall of Fame (1993)

As far as I am concerned, that puts the entire question of Ryan Tannehill's pocket awareness to bed.

:rolleyes2:

It was a legitimate criticism. Him improving in that area doesn't mean it wasn't. Just like criticizing his inability to hit the deep ball at this point doesn't suddenly become invalid if he eventually overcomes that problem.

Tannehill has struggled with pocket awareness. He is doing better it seems.

I couldn't watch the game, but was he really facing much of a pass rush?

i'd say no. They blitzed a lot but the O line and backs picked them up however there were a few examples of Ryan avoiding pressure and making plays down field including on the TD to Matthews.

Overall he's getting better and like Hoops said reps and patience. That's exactly the answer Lazor gave in his presser.
There are some real test coming up against teams with mush better D lines in the next few weeks. Hopefully Ryan is up to the challenge.

You're telling me pocket awareness hasn't been an issue with tannehill????? Come on man. He had excellent pocket awareness in the charger game, maybe that's what fouts was talking about, but it has been far from excellent up to this point. When you compare the pocket awareness of someone like Andrew luck to tannehill it's like night and day.

Our DL makes a lot of veteran QBs look like they have pocket presence issues.
