Well, if you don't want Ireland, who do you want as his replacement? Look at the Jets. Tannenbaum was a capologist without a personnel background. So Rex Ryan was essentially picking the players. And when they fired Tannenbaum, they couldn't give away the job because 1) no GM would want to work with Rex Ryan; 2) they were in cap-hell and couldn't re-sign any of their own players. So they replaced Tannenbaum with yet another capologist from the Seahawks so de facto it will be Rex Ryan picking the players.

I think the rapport between Philbin and Ireland on personnel decisions is a relationship worth preserving at this point. People complain about Ireland but there are many teams in far worse situations around the league. To me, it was Parcells and Sparano that were the problems all along.

Sorry, the "who do you hire instead" excuse is the worst of all excuses, by far. If you own your own business, do you keep a ****ty employee just because don't know who is out there to replace him? Only if you are really bad at running your business. Further, there are plenty of options throughout the NFL.

Also, Philbin is not Ryan.

Knew this was coming. A month ago, everyone on here was screaming "if we dont win he wont return!!!!". He signs a receiver and linebackers and everyone is beginning to get cold feet.

I haven't seen anyone say anything remotely close to what you claim. Nobody has suggested he should get an extension based off of these off season signings. Giving a little praise to someone for offseason moves isn't the same thing as wanting to give him an extension. Really...everyone is getting cold feet?

I think that's something all of us can be thankful for!

Ok. So let me get this straight. The op is asking if Ireland deserves another year irrespective of what we actually do during this season, simply because of our offseason moves? So even if we go 7-9 again, he's posing the question if we should retain Ireland just because of the acquisitions we made this off season? Seriously, is this a legit question? He's pretty much saying the offseason means more than the actual regular season. You know, when the games are actually played.

I think if Ireland is replaced that the new GM is going to want to hire his own head coach. Otherwise we could have slim pickings at the GM spot like the Jets did by keeping Rex Ryan. I can't say that Philbin would definitely be gone, but it wouldn't shock me if he gets replaced by the new GM.

Yep, most likely. Either that or a new GM wont actually be a GM, he would just be a personnel guy and Philbin would get final say, but that would have to be decided before someone new is hired, and it would definitely reduced the pool of potential candidates.

At best, Jeff Ireland will become a competant general manager. Adequate. Average. Middle of the road. The point im getting at: hes not going to be a top tier guy. We could find any numerous candidates whose floor is "average", not their ceiling.

And for the "far worse" situations around the league, when it gets to much they are fired. Jags had a god awful general manager, he was fired in his what...4th year? 3rd? Ireland is going into his 6th draft. Rumors are floating around that Martin Mayhew will be fired if he doesnt hit in this draft. The Lions are night and days more talented then before he showed up, but hes made mistakes and hes being held accountable. He was hired a year after Ireland. 2 wrongs dont make a right. Just because their are worse situations out there doesnt mean our situation is great.

Also, the fact that people didnt want to work for the Jets(if thats even true, i saw nothing to suggest people didnt want the job, didnt Brian Gaine fly up there for an interview?) had nothing to do with Rex Ryan. It had everything to do with their god awful cap situation and playing in a fickle market. All the GM candidates knew it would take years to fix that mess and they didnt think they would get the time to do the job properly. Look at the heat thats been going towards Reggie Mckenzie, and thats frigging Oakland not New York.

And the "Its Parcells fault! Its Sparanos fault!" has been done to death. Ireland was on board for every decision they made and was given the highly overrated "final say" in 2010. If he gave up his power to Sparano then he deserves to be fired for that mistakes. And all of that doesnt excuse drafting horrible players. Believe it or not, Bill Parcells and Tony Sparano were not adverse to good players.

Teams will see we have a good coach, a franchise quarterback, all our draft picks, and a good cap situation. You dont think potential general managers will see the benefit of working for us?

People are giving credit for the Philbin hire to the owner and not the GM. So if the Dolphins have a losing season, how do you know that the blame shouldn't be placed on the coach rather than the GM? Perhaps Ireland has a great draft and the team still has a losing record. If it was Ireland getting credit for the Philbin hire, then I could see justification for firing both if the team has a poor record (though I would still prefer to retain each for another year).

Hilariously and depressingly, the "Yes keep him" is winning by a steady margin.

Its amazing how our fanbase has gotten used to accepting mediocrity.

Not even close at this point. He took a 1st nice step, nothing more.

The bottom line is that the owner believes in him, so he will get an extension. But the reason he deserves another year IMHO is because of how he managed the cap to be able to go all-in this year and to have 5 picks in the first 82. That's probably why he signed FA bums like Naanee last year, because what would have been the point of spending money on top quality FA's with an inexperienced starting rookie QB? He knew the Dolphins weren't in a position to win last year.
But he drained the cap to the point that we won't be able to do much of anything next year. The team that we field this year will be almost the same the year after that. It would be pointless to keep Ireland and Philbin around of they lose this year.

Yes, it is amazing how this fan base has gotten used to accepting LOSING. It's going to get worse over time. Currently we only have a few fans left who remember the championships. Soon we will only have a few fans left who remember the Marino years. Then we will have even fewer fans left who remember the boring winning seasons under Wannstedt. When that happens they will continue to defend Ireland when our four year record is 4-12, 4-12, 3-13, 4-12. Don't forget, Matt Millen had his defenders as well -- all the way up until the end.

Ireland is just part of a team including Philbin, the scouts, coaches and everyone else. To attribute our results the season to Ireland good or bad is a bit wrong. The draft to me is a biggie but if Ireland drafts well I think we could be building something special here and continuity is important in seeing that through.

No one wanted the Jets GM job because that GM would not have been able to hire his own coach. The owner had committed to Ryan and gave him an extension. So the Jets ended up with an inexperienced capologist as the GM. So if you want Ireland fired at the end of this year should the team not have a winning record, then 1) either Philbin gets fired too or 2) you end up with an inferior GM as a replacement for Ireland.

You fire them both. Enough with the excuse making and finger pointing.
