I think everyone who is just learning about Matt Roth is getting incredibly excited as all of us Big10/Miami fans who've watched him dominate over the years.

My question is, (I can't figure out how to post a poll yet) after watching his highlights and realizing what a great (potentially) 2nd round pick he is, how many of you would still rather have Derrick Johnson over Matt Roth?

In Saban we trust. I believe we got the stud RB and the stud LB.

Roth!! Unless DJ had been there at #46. Can't really compare since we didn't have the right picks. DJ at #2, Hell No!!

Plus, weren't the ESPN guys knocking DJ's tackling ability on draft day?? Not a good thing for a LB

I LOVE the Matt Roth pick at #46. But there is just no comparison IMO. Derrick Johnson was the top LB in the draft and might have been the top defensive player in the draft as well. I thought his stock dropping was extremely overrated. This guy MAKES PLAYS. Doesnt matter how he does it (avoiding blockers, arm tackling), he dominates every game he plays in.

they dont even play the same position. derrick johnson was also a higher rated prospect. if they were both there at 40-whatever, id take johnson

I would take Roth. DJ didnt want to take on lineman. Maybe it was fear of getting hurt before his big pay day... But that just doesnt sit well with me. I want a LB who wants to get in there and make big hits and isnt scared to take on a OL when he needs to.

This is a bad comparison imo though. One plays DE the other is a true LB. Its Crowder we should be comparing to DJ. From what Ive heard and seen, Crowder wouldve been the top LB taken if it werent for injury concerns and off the field issues. He isnt scared to take on a block from a OL and make a play.

I've been watching Roth's hilights, and it's like he is shot out of a cannon. He comes off the ball like Jason Taylor and just keeps coming. So right now I like Roth.

The question wasn't for a direct comparison at the same position. More of who would you rather have on your defense over the next several years. Personally, I don't think DJ dropping was a coincidence. I think he's a little (slightly) overrated. Time will tell. I think Roth is the next Kevin Greene, DJ is the next good, but not great LB.

Johnson was highly overrated, IMO. Based on what I saw from him, he's the type of player that will go for the big hit instead of wrapping up to make the tackle. He misses a ton of tackles because of that. I also see him trying to run around blocks. He lived off his athleticism in college. That won't be enough in the NFL. He's going to have to get to the point that he's willing to take on a blocker. First step is desire. The next is learning how to use his hands to fend off blockers. I also don't like the fact that Texas gave him the green light to shoot gaps. Despite that, he didn't exactly make a lot of stops behind the line.

IMO, Channing Crowder was the better linebacker. I've been saying that for quite some time now.

Oh I thought it was a direct comparison. Yeah, I would still go with Roth because of the fire he brings onto the field. DJ didnt take on college OLs. No way does he want to mix it up with the beasts in the NFL. I think people started viewing him as a soft player. That is why he dropped. He'll be good in a defense that keeps OL off him and lets him run to the ball. Roth is a mean mofo though and you need guys up front like that.

100% agreement. If Crowder stays healthy, he will out play DJ.

Matt Roth single handedly took over against osu and mich.

I never saw him play, but everything I hear is that he has that motor, and mentality that you want on your team. Aggression...:fire: goooooood! Can never have too much. If he has 1 knock it's a bit of discipoline and penalties, but Saban can likely control that. I can't wait to se his first big hit!
