Throughout the course of a season, the Miami Dolphins are usually full of surprises – some good and some bad.

But seemingly every year there is a “sleeper” who emerges into a productive player for the Dolphins. Last year, two quality sleepers did well in wide receiver Rishard Matthews and center Sam Brenner. Both played important roles for the Dolphins by the end of the year.

Who is the Dolphins' best ''sleeper'' candidate?
  • DE Terrence Fede
  • LB Jordan Tripp
  • RB Damien Williams
  • DT Anthony Johnson
  • Other
So who will be this year’s biggest sleeper in Miami? Which player will come out of nowhere and play an important role for the team?

Will it be rookie defensive end Terrence Fede? The seventh-round pick has shown flashes in training camp and the preseason. The Dolphins are very deep at defensive end and it would take several injuries for Fede to see the field. Can he find a role in 2014?

What about Dolphins rookie linebacker Jordan Tripp? Miami’s fifth-round pick has shown solid athleticism and the ability to stay around the football. Linebacker is a position of need and Tripp could get a shot if he makes plays.

Could it be undrafted rookie running back Damien Williams? He’s run the ball well and shown the ability to catch out of the backfield, which is important in Bill Lazor’s offense. Williams has a solid chance to make the 53-man roster. Will Williams get a chance to carry the ball in the regular season? Finally, rookie defensive tackle Anthony Johnson made plays in camp as well.

Hm......

Well to start, in order to make impact, must get on the field.

For Fede, I think he will be a solid player if he makes the 53. But best sleeper? No. Doubtfull he makes much of a impact sitting behind Wake/Vernon/Jordan.

For Tripp, he makes the 53 and is likely the #4 LB on the depth chart and primary back up at MLB and OLB (which ever is needed first). If Wheeler or Ellerbe stink it up, I wont be surprised if he slides in and is slotted as starter. (My vote is on him).

For Williams, I HOPE he makes the 53. He gets snatched off P.S. QUICK for a RB needy team (Giants? Falcons?). I like what I have heard from camp reports and would rather keep him over D. Thomas. Once again, I doubt he gets many snaps sitting behind Miller/Moreno.

For Johnson, Another player I HOPE makes the 53. I think he also gets snatched off the P.S. quickly. Haven't heard much from AJ Francis, and who should be kept. Obviously Starks/Odrick/Mitchell are the 3 man DT rotation, so even if he makes the squad doubt he much play time as well.

What happens if Fede gets as many sacks in the first 4 games with Jordan out, as Jordan did all of last year? (which was 2). Not saying he will just wonder what the reaction will be in the media and amongst the fans.

I'm not sure Johnson makes the team yet. He may only because A.J. Francis has been hurt but Garrison Smith has been mentioned a lot more than Johnson and I think people are glossing over him.

Of those options I'd say Tripp. He has a legitimate chance to play and is more polished than Fede and more of a playmaker than Johnson. I doubt Williams gets much playing time.

I wouldn't rule out one of our CB's getting into this discussion before the season ends.

Being a good coach means swallowing your pride sometimes and making the choice based off of who is the better player, not who you drafted higher. I think a lot of coaches get caught up on players due to draft status. If they suck, let it go and move on. If Tripp outplays Wheeler and his huge contract, then **** it play Tripp. If Fede outperforms Jordan then put Jordan on the bench. I'm hoping Fede lights a fire under Jordan and we end up with two really young really promising DE's.

Davis. If one of our CB's go down, I think he will take the spot and run with it. Be warned though, he will also get burnt; but his play-making ability will out-weigh his "bun factor."

The best case scenario would be Fede making a strong enough impact that the coaching staff actually moved Jordan to linebacker. It will be interesting to see if Fede will actually get any snaps on Sundays though (still 3 PS games for him to continue to show up). I think Fede has the ability but I'm not sure they trust him just yet…hope he has a monster next couple of games.

As for the poll, Im going with Tripp. I like McCain as well

Tripp is most likely to get some actual PT.

since "only rookies" was not specified:

[X] other (Dion Sims) will come out of relative obscurity to make a "Fasano" type blocking and red zone difference
