I know the plan is Henne starts in 2010...but i ask:
How well would Penny have to play for him to be starter?

A. Win Superbowl
B. Win AFC Championship
Edited: C. Win Divisional Round (Was: Win Conference Game)
D. Win Wildcard
E. Win Division

If Pennington leads MIA to the best record in the conference, that's good enough to guarantee he's the starting QB in 2010 regardless of what happens in the playoffs.

If he wins the division again, but loses in the wildcard, then I think we go with Henne in 2010.

If he wins the division and wins a wildcard, but loses in a divisional playoff game? Tough one. But I think we go with Henne there too in 2010.

I think that Pennington needs to at least go with either winning the conference or win the AFC Championship (which I feel are almost equal as far as gauging this meter goes) to ensure he's the QB in 2010.

Anything less, its Henne's team in 2010.

With the schedule we have next year if Penny leads us to another division championship he will be the starter in 2010. In fact with next year schedule I say all he needs to do is play well and stay healthy and he's are starter in 2010. You guys do realize that the combined record for are opponents last year was 91-117 next year it is 125-83. That a difference of +68 games! If Penny some how gets us a wild card spot it would be just as impressive as last year. IMHO

We were extremely lucky Pennington stayed healthy for the entire 2008 season. That is unusual for him. I think it will depend on his health.

I really didn't know that the plan was for Henne to start in 2010.

I agree.

Our schedule is going to be very tough.

dude our conference is the afc and winning the conference means winning the afc championship.... did you mean winning the 1st seed and the afc ?? either way i agree... penny's gunna hafta take us deep in the playoffs. Real Deep.

Just remember that this is a two part equation and we cant just assume they'll be ready to toss a guy with no experience i and take one of the smartest QBs in the league out. Theres also is that contract thing... We would need to resign Chad next offseason.

We certainly didnt sign Pennington for 3 years........ we all were a little suprised at how big the contract we gave him was.... but now that he's comeback player of the year and runner-up for MVP he could have alot of options next year.

I don't think a potentially disappointing record of the team overall would lose Pennington (assuming he'll still be on the Miami roster then) his job if he has played well individually. If he's playing a great game and everyone round him is playing like crud, they're not likely to bench Pennington. I wouldn't have thought so anyway.

Likewise, if the Dolphins win in spite of Pennington, they're not likely to keep him starting.

The team's record isn't entirely indicative of the QB's play.

Isn't winning the conference the same thing as winning the AFC Championship game? I mean to win the conference you have to win the championship game.

i want to say that it wont matter what he does because i have been waiting for another QB that can work with Ginn and let Ginn use his speed to get past the CB and toss it 60 yards to a open Ginn. Pennington makes Ginn look bad and i hate that. I would love for Henne to start ASAP and hope he is the QB we have been looking for since Marino. With that said, Pennington is a fantastic QB and has stablized this offense. But i think the Henne era will start soon. But lets not look to far foward. i am still excited for the off-season and draft. LETS GO PHINS!!

hold on now guys...don't get ahead of yourselves here ok...we very well could find ourselves in the same situation as the Pats did back when Bledsoe got hurt and Brady came in...we all saw how that turned out for them...the very same thing could happen here with us...Pennington could get hurt sometime during the 09 season, and Henne comes in and we don't look back...if that happens, then i'll have no problems with Pennington being offered the QB Coaches job...and hopefully he'll accept...and he starts there and works his way up through the coaching ranks, and becomes a great OC for us...

i wouldnt mind this happening. especially pennington staying on board to coach.

Pennington really has to do none of the above. The team needs to keep improving and all Chad has to do is play good football like he did this year. If he is better than Henne or Beck in 2010 he will start in 2010. I suspect, unless he is injured, that he will be the best QB not only in 2009 but 2010 as well. We just have to improve the team around him. QB is the least of the problem areas for the Fins but it seems to be the area we get the most posts about.
And please quit the "He's holding Ginn back" talk. The only thing that holds Ginn back from going to the next level is Ginn. He is an adequate but not elite #1 receiver. He may become elite but he also may never get there. JETS fans were saying the same thing about Pennington and cheering for their strong armed reserve Clemens. The guy got his chance the second half of the season and was not near as good as Chad had been in the 1st half of his worse year as a pro. So then it was get Favre. They did and we all know how that worked out. Clemens or Favre were not able to get the ball downfield to Coles or Cotchery any better than Chad and were far worse at checking down to the open receiver. Thus a high number of INTs for both of them and much lower QB ratings and yards per attempt.
