Pop the champagne!

It is really sad to think the Dolphins haven't won a superbowl since the early 70s... There are probably some people out there who were born that year that are grandparents today...

Respect your elders, kid. Especially those that are the only ones in history to have accomplished such a great feat.

It's great for the members of that team and the fans that cheered them on back then, but for fans such as myself that weren't even a speck of DNA in their father's sperm it's getting a bit tired to celebrate this feat. I have no connection to it, and all it serves to do is remind me how pathetic this team has been during my lifetime. The Dolphins haven't even been to a Superbowl since I was in diapers...
If you are up for a good, easy read that chronicles that magical season, I highly recommend "Undefeated" by Mike Freeman. It really puts that season (and what led up to it) into perspective. It should definitely help with the lack of connection feeling that you cite.

What's weird about this year is there was no build up. I wonder if the '72 guys even had the champagne on ice?

We are still celebrating something (more than our current teams) that happened the same month as the following:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/January_1973

* CBS sells the New York Yankees for $10 million to a 12-person syndicate led by George Steinbrenner (3.2 million dollars more than CBS bought the Yankees for).

* Elvis Presley's concert in Hawaii. The first worldwide telecast by an entertainer watched by more people than watched the Apollo moon landings.

* U.S. President Richard Nixon is inaugurated for his second term.[1]

* Roe v. Wade: The U.S. Supreme Court overturns state bans on abortion.

* George Foreman defeats Joe Frazier to win the heavyweight world boxing championship.

* U.S. involvement in the Vietnam War ends with the signing of the Paris Peace Accords.[1]

And this was the number 1 song in the country:

good stuff. I heard that song on the radio last weekend and if I'm honest with myself I think it still holds up - just like 17-0 :)

I was 3 years old the last time the Dolphins even played in the AFC Championship Game. I am of the generation of Dolphins fans that knows nothing but losing and disappointment.

I'd rather the current team give us a reason to pop champagne.

Well, aren't you smug?

I'd rather celebrate winning the lottery, but I would also celebrate finding $100 on the sidewalk too.

Some of you need to pull the stick out of your pooper and enjoy it for what it is.

Enjoy it 72 phins has to be one of if it the earliest than all the undefeated teams have fallen

Im so tired of that being the only thing to celebrate each year. If not for a a very lucky and good play by the Giants we would not even have that anymore

If it wasn't for a lot of things happening we wouldn't have that anymore..........but we do so those of us who can still enjoy reliving it.

Absolutely awesome. It's my number one priority every season. I start rooting from opening week.

This year was unusually favorable because the top quarterbacks had severe road tests early. Seattle took care of both Rodgers and Peyton. I was worried about the Eagles. Luckily the 49ers rallied to top them.

I don't want to discount Brady but at age 37 he's not as dangerous as previously, at least not every week.

For some reasons the excellent teams without the relentless quarterbacks don't concern me. As much as I respect Russell Wilson he's not in that category yet, if ever. I wasn't worried about Seattle. Nor the Colts, even with Andrew Luck. That's still a flawed team.

Green Bay still could be problematic with Rodgers in his prime. I'll be very pleased if he loses early or relatively early each of the next half dozen years or so.

I don't think the younger fans who didn't experience 1972 have any comprehension of how special that distinction is, or how long it could survive unmatched, or how jealous other fan bases are, or what our reputation would be without it. Maybe 15 years ago I finished a radio program at the Stardust and several of us from the panel went across the street to eat at the food court at the Riviera. One guy who had been in the audience followed us over there. He walked up to me. Said he was a Steelers fan. He asked if it was true I had Dolphin season tickets in 1972 when I was a kid. When I said yes, he grabbed my shoulders and started shaking me: "Do you know what that is? Do you have any idea what that is? The only undefeated season in NFL history AND YOU SAW IT? That's unbelievable. That team is unbelievable. No other team is mentioned every year except them. It's unbelievable."

I'm actually shorting him on how many times he said it was unbelievable. My friends were ordering pizza and laughing at my predicament. Anyway, when I mentioned the '85 Bears as another team that is mentioned every year he wanted none of it. "Screw the '85 Bears. Do you think anybody will care about them in a hundred years?"

Just a shame we haven't had an event to joy like winning a superbowl since. As a dolphin fan it gets old living off of almost 50 years in past

Hey...I understand those that don't remember perfection...but I do and am proud every year when it extends another year.

I would love for the current team to give us a reason to feel the same way.

Woooo awesome!! New england won, let's pop the champagne!
