Pope says that Saban has ignored OL

T

tonto_phin

its true but:

- the WannySpeil cupboard was bare/old in many areas

- can you address every need in 2 offseasons with minimal cap room?

- signed best OL coach available

- teams are overpaying interior OL guys in FA

- injuries

no OL no O.
Lineman have been underpaid for years they are the hardest working and smartest players on the field. They are the TEAM, look at Brady and see how much time he has to throw.

Hadnot (as a Guard), Carey and James are all functional. What Saban has failed to address is the Left Tackle position and center (although to be fair Hadnot was worth a shot) If we get a stud left tackle and center next year we'll have a top ten oline.

I agree with Pope. Compare the number of DL that Saban drafted and the number of OL that Saban has drafted.

DL:
Roth
MWright
RWright
FEvans
KVickerson

OL:
Toledo
Alabi

Note that our starting defensive line is very good and includes none of our drafted players.

DL: overstocked
OL: bare cupboard

it is definitely time to say to Houck:

"no more scouting Alabi's and Toledo's, give us a first day wish list for next year's draft, we will even trade up if we have to"

He's right, Saban has not paid nearly enough attention to the OL. And since we'll likely be drafting in the top 5 next draft, we should trade down for two good 2nd rounders and pick up a couple OL players with some future. I say trade down because if we take an OLineman in the top 5 then we'll have to pay him way too much.

I always had the Pope pegged as more of a Saints fan, but whatever...

Definately right though....we really need OL, preferably first day draft picks (Winston Justice in the first, anyone?). Carey and James are solid at their current spots, and Hadnot is a good guard....but we desperately need better play from our LT and C. Are there any good T prospects in the draft this yr projected to go in the first?

the Pope is a fin fan?

Edit: nevermind, I identified the wrong person.

Regarding this little news tidbit: one, I don't see a source, and two, I thought our problems started and ended with Daunte Culpepper. What gives, Finheaven?

The only I think has earned his keep is Vernon. The rest can go away.

Hadnot

Give Hadnot a break. He was really good last yeat at guard and is trying to make the transition to center. I'd like to see him back at guard and for us to bring in a center. Too bad we couldn't have gotten Mangold last year in the draft. Oh wait, i forgot, we got a stud in Jason Allen!

It seems most of the coaches that have been here(Johnson, Wannstedt & Saban), all say they'll address the offensive line issue but never really do. That's what happens when you have a defensive coordinator who becomes a coach.
