The game was ugly, but I'm surprised at just how upset everyone is on this forum. Here's a few good things I noticed:
1. Ronnie Brown- In his 2 games thus far I really like the way he runs. Instead of blindly running where the play is designed, Ronnie is very patient in waitiing for holes to develop and reading the blocks. As a power back, I didn't expect to see this. It's what sets Ricky apart IMO, and I'm pleased to see that trait in Ronnie.
2. The O-line- Obviously we aren't the mid 90's Cowboys, but we're a lot better than we were last year. The QB's have some time, and there is a bit of push up front. Remeber, the only game we really gameplanned for was TB, and we looked great in that game with blitz pickups and run blocking.
3. Our rookies- They are starting to learn their roles and are beginning to make some plays. I hear some criticism of Roth, but I disagree. People try to compare him with JT, but he's a totally different style of player. Roth played well last night, as did Daniels and Wright.
4. Secondary- They weren't tested last night really, but in the last 2 or 3 games they have shown huge improvements. It's still a concern, but they have silenced a lot of critics with their play lately.
The biggest problem with last night was our guys were not up for the game. In some respects it is understandable. The starters played very sparingly, and it's the final game of the preseason. I did like that Saban was furious that we played with little emotion, but IMO that won't be a problem once the games start counting.
The other big issue is the play of the quarterbacks. Gus didn't really stay on the field much, so he sorta backed into the starting job. Feeley may have got himself cut, and even the Feeley supporters don't seem to have his back anymore. It's amazing that at 7:00 pm on Thursday he was full of potential and had learned the offense to the point he no longer could be considered turnover prone, then by 11:00 he had played himself right off the roster. If you were one of the posters that had that drastic change of heart in a 4 hour span I would suggest being a little more objective in the future.
Gus needs to start @ Denver IMO. Once the real games start, there's no more excuses. If he doesn't play at least average, name Sage the starter for the rest of the year and pray he does well.
