Positives/Negatives to take from Today's Game

The Positives

1. The way the Jets ran all over us in the first half. We actually made second half adjustments and then the Jets COULD NOT run against our "D".

2. The goal line stand was awesome. The "D" really believes in themselves again.

3. Despite not making many big plays, Gus Frerotte played well enough to win. He would have been helped considerably more with a consistent running game.

4. Randy McMichael, Jason Taylor and Zach Thomas played fantastic today.

The Negatives

1. The offensive lineplay today was completely unacceptable. Brown didn't have much room to run and Frerotte had to hurry many of his throws. We need to acquire a dominating left tackle in the draft or free agency this offseason.

2. Ronnie Brown appeared hesitant at times. He is just a rookie starting his second pro game and I do believe he will be a very good back in this league. Saban just needs to give him some more tough love and tutoring.

3. Reggie Howard was playing the WRs with way too big a cushion. He really is a weak link in this defense. I believe in a couple weeks we'll see Howard demoted for Travis Daniels.

4. The penalties. You must take into account we still have a lot of players from the Dave Wannsedt / Rick Spielman regime. Some of these guys aren't too smart and rest assured, they won't be here next year, because Saban won't tolerate drive killing penalties.

So let's keep this loss in perspective...this team is not a finished product. Coach Saban will pick up another couple big 3-4 linebackers that can rush the passer and some big bodies for the d-line in the offseason. Rest assured, the o-line will receive an enema as well.

I am proud of this team, even though they lost, because they never gave up and they are on the right track.

One last thing.....GO DOLPHINS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I agree that we are on the right track. This loss shouldn't get us down too much. Frankly, I couldn't help but notice how much better the coaching is. It wasn't bad play calling that lost the game, it was a failure to make the plays happen.
Even with a loss like this I feel much better about our future.

Exactly. Remember the Monday Night Jets game at the Meadowlands last year? They ran all over us in the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th quarters. The Jets tried to do that again to us today, but our "D" stopped them cold in the second half and kept us in the game.

We are on the right track. The offense is always slower to get going, while the defense is usually ahead. In a few weeks I think our offense will get much better.

I think the plays were there for us to make...we just didnt execute. I was not big on Frerrote earlier but its clear he should be our qb, i think its good we at least have that settled, instead of having frerrote come out and screw up and think qb 'controversy' again...

something needs to be done about the right tackle position....

I like the way our dolphins are playing. I think our coaches know what there doing with the playcalling we just need to be a little more consistant on getting those plays done.

Drops, bad coverage (mainly Howard), penalties all chipped in on the loss. I do agree with you though, Zach, JT, McMike all played awesome today. One person you forgot to include is Seau, he was a force on the field today.

Another goal-line stand by our D. Unbelievable what they've done in the past two weeks in this area. They must be beaming with confidence that nobody can get in the endzone running the ball.

Yeah, so much for Junior being upset about his position switch. I forgot his stats, but he had a sack and was flying all over the place and nailed Curtis Martin in the backfield at least a couple of times.

My hat is off to those guys on "D".

A positive is we have allowed 27 points in two games, very good especially since both were playoff teams last year. You can see the schemes and aggressiveness will be extremely effective especially when a few personnel holes are plugged.

Next week will be a significant test for the new defense. Delhomme is in his prime and dating to last season the Panthers have scored 20 or more points 12 straight games. Many of those numbers were well into the 30s. I got into an argument today at our offices with the chief oddsmakers because the line and total for next week's game doesn't give Carolina's offense enough credit. At -3.5 and 37.5 that estimates Carolina 20.5 and Miami 17. When you are only alloting 20.5 points to a team that persistently demonstrates that is the rock bottom of its output, that makes very little sense to me. I think Caroilina should be pegged closer to 24. The oddsmakers said they agree with me but since the public isn't betting Carolina to score high points they won't make adjustments until that happens.

I agree with your summaries of the positives and negatives of individual personnel. My greatest disappointment with the entire team is I really don't think we made the most of our first two picks. And that was absolutely critical considering where we were drafting and the multiple needs. I'm tired of elongated threads and have given my opinions on Brown and Roth repeatedly.

One last thing.....GO DOLPHINS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

As much as our WRs dropped a few catchable balls, Gus didn't have that great of a game...He is actually weaker on his longer routes and outs than I thought. If he hits some of those out patterns, it's a different game.

The penalties...you hit the nail squarely on the head there...we just aren't talented enough to continue to shoot ourselves in the foot and get away with it...we did somewhat last week, but it caught up to us this week...

I think Reggie was giving a bigger cushion because he kept slipping early in the game..in fact on one play early, it looked like he took a real bad angle and missed a tackle, but he actually was going to the ground...but I didn't see anyone else having that problem (slipping)...

I would add dropped passes to the list of negatives....but those usually even out.....we did not play our best game and yet we were right in it in the 4th quarter....a few plays here and there and we could be 2-0.....well time to
focus on next week.

yeahhh the drops killed us today, that the terrible play of the o-line and the penalties cust us the game
